Technology has evolved to the point where manufacturers must deliver tailored products to meet customer expectations.  These personalized products and customer centric experiences have made the manufacturing process much more complex.  So, how can manufacturers efficiently manage all of the variables such as fluctuations in the demand for materials, varying processing times, technical set up requirements, and mitigate any negative impact to their manufacturing operations should there be a stoppage at one stage in the process?

In order to remain competitive and efficient, manufacturers need to leverage automation and standardize production processes.  SAP Digital Manufacturing Cloud is an industry cloud solution for discrete manufacturers including Industrial Equipment, Components, and Automotive with newly released functionality to support modular production.  It enables the shift from line production to a cellular approach that focuses on flexibility, taking into consideration allowances for passing or optional steps to keep things moving should a cell be disrupted.  Additionally, it accommodates for efficient scaling and can react to various customer demands, the ability to optimize accelerating cycles and increase overall manufacturing performance.  Let’s take a closer look at some of the key features.

WIP transport enables the tracking and handling of work in progress between production operations and in the warehouse.  This allows manufacturers to understand WIP between the factory and the warehouse.

WIP is managed by Logistics Orders

Supply to manufacturing cell enables the staging of components according to supply and production demand. This enables the user to react in case of material shortages and reduce stock-based limitations.

Visualization helps to establish accountability and transparency relative to what is happening on the shop floor so a supervisor can see in real time what is happening.  This supports the management of anomalies and structured problem solving.

Analytical tools assist in identifying bottlenecks in real time.

Moving forward, one of the most important features will be dynamic routing and ad hoc decision making.  The dynamic dispatching engine will be the central part of modular production which supports customers with the modeling of flexible routing and ad hoc decision making to find the optimal routing path through a complex production process.  Stay tuned!!
