SAP Community Call: Calculation View Modeling in Business Application Studio Update
Dear SAP Community,
We are excited to invite you to our Calculation View Modeling in Business Application Studio Update SAP Community Call.
What: Calculation View Modeling in Business Application Studio Update
When: May 17, 4:30 pm CEST (10:30 EDT) live on YouTube
Duration: 1 hour (presentation + Q&A)
Calculation Views serve as a foundation for various data analyses, e.g., in analytic scenarios. Data preparation and enrichment steps that are executed during query processing can be defined within a graphical user interface. In addition, Calculation Views offer various SAP HANA-specific optimization techniques, which make them the tool of choice in performance critical scenarios. By bringing together developers with database performance expertise and developers with extensive knowledge about data structures and processing in one graphical user interface, they offer a unified way to prepare data on the fly for consumption by various tools such as SAP Analytics Cloud.
The session highlights some key features of Calculation Views and explains how Calculation Views fit into SAP HANA Cloud development concepts, e.g., the HANA Deployment Infrastructure (HDI). The demo will be done in SAP Business Application Studio. Still, the same concepts can also be applied in environments that make use of SAP Web IDE for SAP HANA.

Is it true that new enhancements like this are only going into BAS and that the Web IDE for HANA is effectively deprecated? I'll certainly try to make it to that presentation but that is 6:30 AM Alaska time.
Thanks
Eric
Thanks Eric for your interest!
For SAP HANA Cloud, SAP Business Application Studio (BAS) is the tool of choice for calculation view development. Therefore, new features and enhancements are only delivered in BAS.
On premise, SAP Web IDE for HANA remains the tool of choice for calculation view development. Innovations on premise are by the nature of the delivery model always a bit delayed when compared to SAP HANA Cloud and some features are not made available on premise at all. If you want to get an overview of what was delivered with SAP Web IDE for SPS06 have a look at the what's new
Generally speaking, projects with calculation view developments can be re-used in both directions: Re-using a Web IDE project in BAS and re-using a BAS project in Web IDE. However, features that are not available on the specific technology will require some manual effort.
Best,
Jan
Is it in the roadmap to make available BAS for HANA on-premise system ?
Regards,
Michael
Hi Michael,
there are plans to unify the SAP HANA development tooling in SAP HANA Cloud and on premise. In this context one decision could be to make BAS also available on premise for calculation view development.
At the moment no concrete timelines can be given. Given that the development concepts in Web IDE and BAS are very similar, projects can be re-used in the other tooling which will make switching to the unified tooling easier.
Best,
Jan
It was my impression based on the following blog that it is possible to do HANA Calculation View development/deployment of for On-premise systems (e. g. S/4 HANA OP) using Business Application Studio (i did not test it yet). Can you clarify if this is a development model we can run or do we have to stay on the SAP WEB IDE for HANA for on-premise purposes?

The linked blog refers to SAPUI5/Fiori development. Web IDE is the tooling for HANA database development (e.g., calculation view development) on premise.
