Gerolsteiner Brunnen GmbH & Co. KG produces 4 million bottles of mineral water and mineral water-based soft drinks every day. Energy efficiency specialist and longtime SAP partner INTENSE AG created an Internet of Things (IoT) based solution IRES (Intelligent Resource Efficiency Solution) on SAP Business Technology Platform that allows Gerolsteiner to optimize the volume of mineral water it draws from its springs.
A look back
A seemingly simple question stood at the beginning of SAP partner INTENSE AG’s journey at Gerolsteiner: “How many liters of water does it need to produce one liter of mineral water”?
The cooperation
To put the technology in place, INTENSE engaged with SAP Co-Innovation Lab (COIL), which supports SAP partners by sharing expertise to help develop prototypes for specific customers.
The solution
The resulting SaaS solution Intelligent Resource Efficiency Solution (IRES) gives the required insights into the production data and allows Gerolsteiner to manage a sustainable source-to-production chain. As Arndt Buechsenschuetz, Head of Process Engineering at Gerolsteiner, phrased it: “I don’t want to get one liter too much out of the ground, nor one liter too little”.

In addition, IRES goes beyond this use case by e.g. providing insights into the full energy and resource consumption, as well as integrating with ERP production plan data to forecast consumption.
The project
Since the early steps of the project in 2019, and in close collaboration with the SAP Germany Office of the CTO, the SAP Co-Innovation Lab (COIL) team for DACH supported SAP partner INTENSE AG in the development of their solution on the SAP Business Technology Platform; from the first customer prototype until full solution availability today, leveraging SAP IoT, Event Mesh, Job Scheduling Service, Launchpad Service, SAP HANA Cloud, as well as the Connectivity Service.
Certified and published on SAP Store
It was an exciting moment to see INTENSE AG’s certified IRES solution come onto SAP Store. INTENSE AG thus delivered an important cornerstone to the German Government-funded CS4I project (Climate Solution for Industries) that is part of Germany’s plan to become climate neutral by 2045.
This is further proof that innovative SAP partners and the SAP Business Technology Platform contribute significantly to the success of our customers.
