Today's IT world is characterized by transitions, be it the move from on-premises to cloud operations or the enhancement of the IT landscape with new business functionalities that are commonly referred to as "Industry 4.0". All these activities have in common that you cannot transform your complete IT infrastructure in one single step. For quite some time, maybe even forever, you will have to run multiple systems in parallel and access data across systems, probably in a hybrid cloud architecture. To support their customers in this environment, SAP has provided "Smart Data Integration" (SDI) to access remote data in any database from within an SAP HANA database.
