In this post we will introduce the topic of ‘Future Mobility’ and show how SAP’s new Industry Cloud solutions cater to the evolving needs of automotive customers.

Understanding the customer’s point of view and putting their feedback at the centre of every decision are key prerequisites for success in the digital age. These insights must be applied not only in the sales department but also to determine which products are built, how customers are treated, and what services or mobility options are offered. Customers desire a journey in which they determine how they select their products, what specifications these products should have and how they want to finance the products. For automotive companies this means they need to converge stock and built-to-order processes, digital and physical touchpoints, as well as financing arrangements such as cash, leasing, subscription, and rental options.
Enabling real-time, 360-degree insight into customers, vehicles, and usage, along with the ability to adapt and automate the lead-to-cash or subscription process with a real-time, integrated, and automated multichannel solution is essential.
Widening the view from the vehicle to mobility solutions fosters new ecosystems and unlocks new streams of revenue. Emerging business models in the automotive industry provide complementary and alternative solutions to vehicle purchasing and leasing. These new business models focus on value delivered to the customers and provide flexible and convenient choices for buying and leasing automobiles, along with other mobility-related services. Automotive companies need to be able to support direct sales, subscription or other new mobility-as-a-service models as part of a seamless business network and consider the total impact from environmental and sustainability perspectives.
Our connected world creates new ideas and desires every day and turns every car into an entertainment, productivity, and mobility platform unlocking customer value and fresh revenue streams. Vehicles are becoming more intelligent and connected. Increasingly, they act as a platform for delivering new applications, services and hardware enabled features that can be made available on-demand. Large amounts of data need to be continuously exchanged with OEMs, mobility service companies, automotive suppliers, dealers, service providers, and end customers. To effectively implement new business processes across the automotive value chain, stakeholders need access to the same, up-to-date, consistent vehicle information, improving collaboration and innovation.
In response to the shifting industry trends, enterprises must react quickly by adapting their business models. To address the needs and market demand, SAP has launched a new suite of solutions: SAP Digital Vehicle Suite. It is embedded into SAP’s Intelligent Enterprise strategy for Automotive, developed and designed as a public cloud solution portfolio and built on SAP Business Technology Platform.
Each solution within the suite provides a dedicated set of capabilities. As some of the solutions have standalone use cases outside the SAP Digital Vehicle Suite, we decided to design them as modular solutions. Customers and partners can use these solutions outside the suite, while benefiting from the integrated end-to-end capabilities of the whole suite.
SAP Digital Vehicle Operations
The SAP Digital Vehicle Operations solution provides a vehicle-centric view of the sales and fleet management–related processes that integrate and interact seamlessly along the automotive and mobility value chain in the cloud. It allows original equipment manufacturers, national sales companies, and fleet operators to manage vehicles operationally and address future digital retail sales. It serves as the universal portal to execute all vehicle and fleet related activities.
SAP Industry Process Framework
SAP Industry Process Framework helps customers and partners establish, enhance, and automate industry-specific “next practices” such as vehicle and complaint management through efficient process orchestration and reliable status management to expand business value across the enterprise.
It is the glue between front-end applications (such as SAP Digital Vehicle Operations, customer and partner applications), the back-end, S/4HANA, and the digital twin application, SAP Digital Vehicle Hub. It serves as the process orchestration engine for the SAP Digital Vehicle Suite and is extensible to SAP and non-SAP solutions.
SAP Digital Vehicle Hub
The SAP Digital Vehicle Hub application provides a central repository to manage vehicle-related master, transactional, and usage data and to create a comprehensive digital twin of a vehicle. The solution helps companies share vehicle data between relevant stakeholders and enables collaborative business models and value streams along the automotive and mobility value chain.
It is built on SAP Asset Intelligence Network and enables the digital twin of the vehicle and the components to be embedded into business network use cases and scenarios.
SAP S/4HANA
SAP S/4HANA Cloud is a complete enterprise resource planning (ERP) system with built-in intelligent technologies, including AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics. It helps companies adopt new business models, manage business change at speed, orchestrate internal and external resources, and use the predictive power of AI. Benefit from tight, native integration between processes, industry depth, and a consistent in-memory data model.Within the SAP Digital Vehicle Suite it serves as the transactional backend system with all the capabilities SAP offers on a core enterprise resource planning for purchasing, sales, financial & logistic processes.
To summarize the purpose and capabilities of each solution that forms the SAP Digital Vehicle Suite:
The SAP Digital Vehicle Suite represents the cornerstone of our Industry Cloud solution portfolio. We will enhance this continuously alongside our customers and partners to ensure that we stay ahead of emerging industry trends and technologies.
Each of the solutions has a dedicated roadmap detailing upcoming functionalities and enhancements. In addition, we are heavily investing further into the SAP Digital Vehicle Suite to provide even additional solutions and capabilities to our customers and partners - for example, we are working on standardizing and normalizing brand overarching telemetry data provisioning into the suite. We are also looking at vehicle lifecycle financials. So, stay tuned, there is more to come!
