Something old,
something new,
something borrowed,
something blue,
and a sixpence in her shoe.

We all know this traditional wedding motto. Is it only relevant for young happy wedding couples? I have my personal interpretation that this motto can be used in many different occasions. Also, at SAP or any other great company!

But one thing is a must – you must first be in love!

For me, I am in love with my team, with my colleagues and the way we are working together and constantly evolve, in SAP’s Industry Business Unit Retail. We build a perfect team couple:

Something old …

Across the world, we are many experienced colleagues. Experienced in the industry, in the products we take care of and in the way we manage our projects and the daily work. We have great routines and know an incredible number of best practices.

Something new …

And then we have our students, our early talents, our young colleagues. They join the team with an incredible amount of new knowledge, curiosity, strength, and willingness to make things happen. They do not stop before well-known barriers. But, if we give them the opportunity and confidence to find new ways and go different paths, they succeed and reach their goals.

Something borrowed …

Yes, let’s borrow them our experience and share with them the way we would approach things. But it’s a borrow. They do not need to make it to their own. Like in daily life, it’s interesting to get borrowed things back. Sometimes, you unfortunately don’t get them back or they may be returned with a scratch. But mostly they return to you along with chocolates, flowers, stories around and smiles. Isn’t it great to get such cool things in addition? Same here with our young colleagues, they give us back an incredible value, we wouldn’t have even known and tried without them: new ways of networking, new tools, new perspectives on tasks and problems, different knowledge, energy, inspiration, and dedication.

Something blue …

Blue – it represents loyalty. A definition of loyalty could be a strong feeling of support or allegiance. Young and early talents, who can take over responsibility, are the most supportive and loyal colleagues I can imagine working together with. I am inspired and admire their commitment to me and the tasks they take over.

… and a sixpence in her shoe.

What value do we give them? They can learn and grow together with us. We can show appreciation for their contributions and celebrate their achievements and aspirations.

But with the “old,” we are also enriched. We could experience loyalty, inspiration, new ideas and the courage to go new, unknown, and different ways.

The couple following this well-known motto has a promising future. As one of the “olds” I am looking forward to each possibility of meeting and working together with a “new” one. For me, it’s these precious things that make my life here at SAP so incredible and inspiring.

Look for a partner that helps you form an inspiring old-new-team-couple!

But be careful – there are also these very sad moments when the “new” become older and start their own SAP journey!  ❤ Ann-Christin Sauer – miss you and wish you a great future ahead!
