SAP Analytics Cloud is an extremely powerful tool for business intelligence (BI), augmented analytics, predictive analytics and enterprise planning – all in a single solution.

The SAP Analytics Cloud Performance Webinar Series was created to provide best practice and troubleshooting information to users, story designers and modellers so you can obtain the maximum performance and capability from SAP Analytics Cloud. You can access the on-demand recording of this session here: Best Practices for SAP Analytics Cloud for planning – General Troubleshooting webinar

The webinar contains 5 main sections.

1) SAP Analytics Cloud Architecture Overview

Starting at 3:33, the webinar provides a high-level overview of the SAP Analytics Cloud architecture and the individual components that may affect performance for planning scenarios.

There is a particular focus on the importance of your local machine, local network and the interaction between your browser and the SAP Analytics Cloud tenant.

2) Planning Model Best Practices

At 7:21 we start to look at planning models and explain the difference between the New Model and the Classic Account Model.

From 10:23 the webinar highlights the major components and activities that can affect performance in planning scenarios. We go into more detail later in the webinar.

At 12:24 we show all the different types of front-end and back-end calculations and categorize them to help you understand where and how they operate.

We then explore some performance considerations for planning models at 14:51 and introduce some best practices to maximize performance.

The Account dimension is a major influencer on performance and from 16:08 we spend some time exploring performance considerations such as hierarchies, exception aggregations, formulas and what happens when there are too many dependent calculations.

We conclude this section at 23:12 with a discussion on Versions, an important planning topic, and how this works with SAP Analytics Cloud.

3) Data Import

Planning models require the data to be imported. Starting at 25:57, this short section describes the different import methods and provides some configuration recommendations for the SAP Analytics Cloud Agent.

4) Data Actions

Data Actions are a powerful and flexible planning tool for making structural changes to model data. This is an important feature where it can be quite easy to generate a negative performance impact, so we spend some time in this section.

We start at 29:31 and describe the various types of Data Action, then at 31:30 we show the Data Action Monitor which provides a useful overview of the state of all current Data Actions.

The webinar then provides several recommendations, first at 32:41 with recommendations when performing Data Action copy steps, and then at 34:45 with recommendations for Data Action advanced formula steps.

At 35:55 there are a series of interesting slides where we present six examples of inefficient Data Action advanced formula, and alongside each is the equivalent efficient version.

Finally for Data Actions, at 43:18 we compare running Data Actions centrally by an Admin user versus running the Data Actions by individual planning users.

At 44:26 we introduce the Multi Actions feature which allows multiple planning operations to be combined into a single task, thus simplifying workflows.

To conclude the Data Action section, at 45:25 we present a short demo of the very useful Data Action Performance Statistics and Analysis story, which enables you to understand the performance of individual Data Action steps.

5) Data Entry in Stories

Data entry is a key differentiator between planning scenarios and reporting scenarios and in this final section of the webinar, at 52:30, we provide some recommendations to optimize the data entry workflow.

Some Questions about SAP Analytics Cloud Performance

Q: Where can I learn more about the Optimized Story Viewer to help with performance and usability?

A: Please explore these useful resources...

Q: What is the impact on performance using the New Model versus the Classic Account Model?

A: In the New Model, separate measures will be stored as separate columns in contrast to the Account Model. If you are using single measures in Data Actions or stories, the performance can improve because we can better slice the data required for the calculations.

Q: Where can we ask other SAP Analytics Cloud questions?

A: We encourage you to ask your questions in the SAP Community. You have the advantage of getting a response from SAP experts and experienced customers. Find the latest questions here.
