I believe all is well and more than enough until you start working and hit a limit. I started using v4 for simple odata service and hit a limit. I was reusing existing update function module for an action which weren't allowed. Anyways, i rolled back to v2 and developed the required odata. Technically moving forward with backward compatibility is a challenge itself. Second, ECC older versions are still in use so technical innovations takes longer to be adopted in large scale. Good luck to all tech people in SAP ecosystem.
