In SAP Data Warehouse Cloud, you may have noticed the letters “SQL” in the Data Builder. SQL – structured query language – is a computer language that lets you talk to a database. With SQL, you can do several things in a database like retrieve information and even create or modify tables.

SQL-based modeling is available in SAP Data Warehouse Cloud as an alternative to the graphical drag-and-drop view modeler. They both retrieve information from your database; the difference is the technique you use to ask the questions. SQL retrieves information with text-based commands, and the graphical view lets you drag and drop elements into your model and visually build your connections. Behind the scenes, the same things are happening.

Which one should you use?

Well, it’s up to you. Both ways end up in the same question sent to the database and return the same result. We wanted to provide you with both options so you can use the one that works better for you. In the end, the same view/table is being created in the repository, no matter how you define it.

If you are interested in learning SQL, you can try building your model in the Data Builder and with the SQL view editor.
