Cloud computing has been around for years, and its benefits are well documented with many widely shared success stores. One industry that has not been able to quickly hop onto the public cloud bandwagon is the Public Sector. As the guardian of a nation's wellbeing and the safety of its citizens, governments will tread carefully to ensure sensitive data does not end up in the wrong hands.

The Public Sector has been a key focus area for SAP. Through the years, we have partnered with governments across the globe, helping them harness the benefits of technology to operate efficiently and obtain the best value for tax dollars contributed by citizens.

To address the needs of the Public Sector, SAP has announced plans to provide additional compliant cloud environments. Today, we offer FedRAMP compliant cloud environments in the United States. Soon, we will offer the SAP Critical Data Cloud in Australia, followed by the SAP UK Data Cloud in the UK. Further locations are being evaluated and will be added to our roadmap in the future.

What does it mean to offer a compliant cloud environment? Besides the physical location of the data center to meet data sovereignty requirements, we also ensure we comply with additional security controls required by government customers. For example:

  • Ensuring support personnel successfully complete any required security screening before they gain access to sensitive data.

  • Clearing reviews or certifications by qualified assessors nominated by the local government.

  • Working with accredited 3rd party auditors

Regulations and controls are non-negotiable, and government requirements related to the processing of personal data, compliance standards and sovereignty expectations vary. The basis of our compliant cloud is to meet these customers where they are, within the framework of compliance and data sovereignty.

In Australia and the UK, we will be offering compliant cloud environments in collaboration with our SAP NS2 team and selected data center partners operating in these geographies.
