For R&D Engineering and Digital Manufacturing LoB Solutions

The manufacturing industry operates in a highly competitive environment with new products and technologies quickly replacing older ones. On the other hand, manufacturers constantly strive to offer superior products to stay relevant and ahead of the competition. Thus, it becomes necessary to improve product designs and production processes on a continuous basis in order to increase market relevance. Changing a product’s design and manufacturing the new product is a collaborative effort requiring the contribution of design engineers, production engineers, production planners, purchasers, production supervisors, production operators, and many more.

Production Engineering: Bridge the gap between engineering and manufacturing

A line of business solution for comprehensive manufacturing process planning and change management of master data relevant for production such as manufacturing bills of materials, routings, work instructions, production versions, tools as well as data to be collected which extends the S/4HANA digital core. In addition, engineers can analyze the impact of changes on the production orders on the shop floor and thus orchestrate the change management for optimal production execution.

PLM means linking the two worlds seamlessly together, even with a Two-System Approach. As we all know the partnership announcement with SAP and SIEMENS in early July 2020 and opens up completely new possibilities to our customers. With this, we support our customers in the acceleration of their digitization throughout their companies and transform the idea of Industry 4.0 into reality with a combined solution portfolio consisting of Siemens and SAP components, however, this strategy has no impact on our existing SAP PLM solution portfolio. Going forward customers will be having more flexibility and can consider following integration business solutions as options for discrete industries.

1.SAP Teamcenter Integration by Siemens – SAP Teamcenter by Siemens offers the option of managing your product structures in Siemens TC and then integrating/synchronizing them with SAP S/4HANA for the downstream processes. This integration builds upon best practices across system and line of business boundaries, to result in a new integrated solution that blends engineering, manufacturing, and business without worrying about the complexity of integration and reducing total cost of ownership which helps customers to break down siloes so product design teams, manufacturing have the information they need to quickly create and manage customer-centric product and service offerings.

Focus on Integration:

  • The goal of the initial release is to build a solid and reliable foundation for further and extended processes

  • The integration enables a seamless exchange of product-relevant data to enable a unidirectional process integration in the initial release with a strong focus on impact analysis and bidirectional process integration in the future.

  • Subsequent releases will extend the E2E process coverage for specific industry and business processes like CTO or ETO

The Different possible scenarios, the diagram shows joint architecture between SAP and Siemens Kindly note further improvements are subjected to change based on the product roadmap.

2.SAP interface PDMI is a solution that provides flexibility for the customers to integrate their existing external PLM systems and bring the design data early on into SAP S/4HANA.

  • Bi-directional integration between PLM (Teamcenter, PTC Windchill, and Dassault 3DEXPERIENCE) and SAP based on robust PDMI framework.

  • Application-level integration to facilitate the smoother running of processes

  • Enhanced data mapping, monitoring, and error handling capabilities

Customers who currently have most of their manufacturing and operational processes on ECC or SAP S/4HANA  on-premise with 3rd party external PLM systems are able to increase operational efficiencies, customer satisfaction, and lower process costs due to automation of process steps by leveraging the capabilities of PDMI integration as an option with S/4HANA system.

Overview on Production Operations: Drive manufacturing efficiency and quality

Product Data Management with SAP S/4HANA

SAP PDMI quick-start for product data management integration to SAP S/4HANA Manufacturing for production engineering and operations. SAP S/4HANA helps you in streamlining your product development processes in a diverse system landscape and helps to provides you with the features you require to model the production process in more detail, to provide more detailed instructions for your production operators, to verify that the production process has been executed properly, and to record production progress data with visual scenarios. The solution provides standardized bi-directional interfaces between SAP S/4HANA and external Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. The following are supported in the current version of the solution:

  • Teamcenter

  • PTC Windchill

  • 3DEXPERIENCE

These interfaces enable you to have SAP master data, like materials and bills of materials, and SAP documents automatically created, triggered by the external PLM system. In addition, you can push changes made in the SAP system back to the external PLM system, triggered at a particular step in the change process.

SAP product data management integration to SAP S/4HANA establishes a direct link between SAP S/4HANA and the external PLM system for transferring data without the need for additional middleware and enables you to monitor and troubleshoot the data transfer, both at a technical level, as well as the business level and to adapt the mapping settings without coding.

Business benefits of the solution offer you improvements to your product development and change processes as below:

  • Shorter process cycles leading to a faster time-to-market

  • Better end-to-end process control minimizes errors and redundancy

  • Higher data consistency leading to increased compliance and sustainability
