The Toronto d-Shop group has welcomed more than 25 high school students over the years that are part of the school’s co-operative education. Our goal is to give back to the community and provide an environment where students learn hands-on skills in software and technology topics. At the same time, we are committed to expanding the number of minorities in the tech industry.

This semester the students worked on data analysis; using The City of Toronto Open Data Portal. They used data to track Toronto’s progress in fighting climate change by analyzing the effectiveness of green roofs and subsequently finding optimal locations for renewable energy installations.

The second team analyzed different mental health resources available around the City of Toronto and compared them with population statistics to discover their funding per capita and level of accessibility.

The Co-op students from Toronto District School Board and Halton District School Board presented their Open Data Projects to their teachers, SAP Leaders, the City of Toronto Supervisor of Open Data, and the City of Toronto Specialist in Analytics.

Here are some quotes from some of the students regarding their Co-op experience with d-Shop:

“Open Data presentations allowed my team to get some quality and impactful takeaways that would help in the future.” – Syeda.

“I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with SAP. I’ve met many great people and worked on some fun projects. Data science is a useful skill, so working on a data science project in Jupyter notebook could help me succeed in the future. While I’m no expert with Jupyter notebook and Python, during my time here, I have obtained some valuable experience with Matplotlib, Pandas, and Pgeocode”. – Jeff.

“I’ve learned so many useful skills, such as being able to code with Python, and just general skills like public speaking and collaborating with others online. Having the opportunity to work with other co-op students and complete projects that help the world around us is amazing, and I’m so glad I got to work with SAP for my co-op placement. I also got to learn more about my interests, and what I might go into for a future career.” – Russell.

“I can’t believe the number of professionals involved in our learning SAP has managed to teach us how to design a web application using the HANA and how to use the SAP IoT for analytics.” – Luis.

“One project that I especially enjoyed was our hackathon project as it allowed me to use my skill and interest in computer-aided design or CAD to help create a product that would help the environment. In addition, it gave me a great opportunity to show what I could do, express my creativity, and take on some responsibility as the main CAD contributor to the design. Seeing the ideas come together was very rewarding, and I’m glad I got the opportunity to do this project.” – Liam.

It has been a wonderful experience working with the students, and we are looking forward to working with the new batch of students starting next week.
