SAP Event Management on SAP S/4HANA available
We are happy to announce the availability of SAP Event Management on SAP S/4HANA (SAP S/4HANA EM).
SAP S/4HANA EM is a business application to enable real-time end-to-end business process visibility and status monitoring. It provides a broad scope of functions to monitor the execution of your business processes, report events, and automatically react on planned or unplanned situations.
SAP S/4HANA EM is a porting of the well-proven SAP Event Management 9.2 to the SAP S/4HANA environment. It is available for on-premise installations and instances of SAP S/4HANA Supply Chain for transportation management in private cloud. SAP S/4HANA EM can be installed either as a “stand-alone” solution, or, as an add-on on SAP S/4HANA full stack. The minimum version of SAP S/4HANA supported is 1809.
SAP S/4HANA EM comes with a set of pre-configured tracking scenarios for transportation management. A limited license of SAP S/4HANA EM for use in transportation management scenarios is included in the licenses of SAP Transportation Management and SAP S/4HANA Supply Chain for transportation management.
SAP S/4HANA EM is designed for internal use within the boundaries of your organization. As a track & trace solution to support mutual visibility, collaboration, and data exchange with multiple business partners in your supply network we recommend SAP Logistics Business Network, global track and trace option.
More information is available on the help portal page of SAP Event Management on SAP S/4HANA.
If you have questions do not hesitate to ask them on our Q&A page.
Hello Thomas,
Can we use the SAP Event management can we have on Same S/4 HANA Box? and who about the License part same TM Advanced Licence will be supported?
Regards,
Abdul rahim
I also have same question if we can use SAp EM as an add on in same s4 HANA embedded TM with no additional licensing cost.
Howver my assumption is there are 2 option:
a)its an add on in s4 hana server just like yard logistics and there should not be additional cost.
B) separate instance on s/4 hana db.Additional licensing cost involved
Hi Abdul Rahim, hi Indraneel,
yes, you can install SAP EM on SAP S/4HANA as an add-on on S/4HANA, and consequently also on the TM embedded therein. The minimum required S/4HANA release is 1809.
Since EM on S/4HANA is an optional add-on it comes at additional licence fee, independent from whether it is installed as an add-on or on a separate box. The only exception to this applies if you have the advanced TM license. The advanced TM license includes a limited EM license that is restricted to tracking TM scenarios (freight order, freight unit etc.).
Kind regards,
Thomas
Hi,
Ok, so only in case I have embedded TM advanced license in that case only no additional license fees will be included for SAP EM add on installation.
Hey Thomas,
Do you maybe have any official SAP document about the license of EM for the on-premise deployment that explain this exception for the TM usage as this is for S/4 Cloud Private Edition in this document:

Regards,
Karol
Hi Karol,
I think the description you find in paragraph 83.7 of the linked document reflects pretty well the official wording of the limitation. There are no further details in the license definition.
Maybe a slightly different wording makes things clearer: if you use EM exclusively to monitor transportation processes that are managed by documents created in TM, EM is included in the TM license. Examples are tracking freight orders, freight bookings, freight units and so on.
For all other types of processes, such as sales order fulfillment and purchasing execution, that are based on sales order and purchase orders, the full EM license would be required.
Kind regards,
Thomas
Dear Thomas,
Just to make sure, when you said "...Maybe a slightly different wording makes things clearer: if you use EM exclusively to monitor transportation processes that are managed by documents created in TM, EM is included in the TM license. Examples are tracking freight orders, freight bookings, freight units and so on...",
did you mean SAP TM's integration with 'Tracking and Tracing of Processes and Documents' Or, is there a separate SPRO node for this limited EM (that is included with TM advanced)?
Thanks & regards
Manas Ghosh
Thanks for the update. In case we are having only S4 and SAP TM is side car which is also in S4 in that case is there any possibility to install SAP EM on side car TM server instance without any additional license cost.
In case above possibility is not there can we have separate instance of SAP EM inS4 which will track and trace events for both TM ( which is side car) as well as events from sales order ( coming from s4 only)
Hi Indraneel,
if you want to track sales orders this requires the full SAP EM on S/4HANA license, independent from where it is installed. The license fee is dependent on the scenario not the deployment option. TM tracking is the only scenario that is included in the application license.
From a technical perspective you have the option to install EM either on the S/4HANA system "full stack" or on the S/4HANA system that just used TM. You can also connect both (or more) systems to EM.
Kind regards,
Thomas
Thanks a lot for the input. I have one more question on this topic. Since SAP roadmap is to use SAP LBN for freight order tracking process and is planned to be successor of SAP EM, does LBN has all the functionality like alerts based on rule sets, KPI reporting, custom events ( not the standard ones), real time updates from carriers/LSP which is the core functionality of SAP EM. I guess LBN is only used for visibility part and not for exception and KPI reporting related to expected/unexpected events.
Hello Thomas,
if LBN/GTT is used, is EM still required? It seems they are both providing similar functionalities and based on what I have been reading GTT is the cloud version.
Thanks,
Antonella
Hi Antonella,
you do not need EM to use LBN / GTT. Both solutions are independent from each other, and, you are right, have a similar scope addressing use cases. LBN / GTT is a native cloud solution supporting specifically the network aspect of track & trace and sharing visibility among the partners in a supply network. EM is a genuine on-premise solution and typically used for scenarios where mainly users internal to a company work with the visibility information.
If you plan a new implementation, we recommend to look at LBN/GTT first, because it is the strategy product that is in the focus of our investments into new functionality.
Kind regards,
Thomas
Hello Thomas,
Good Information on the LBN.
How far LBN with P44 can support Freight Forwarder( Examples DHL,CEVA) visibility for shipper scenario, do we get end carrier visibility using LBN when we ship using Freight Forwarder. I see FTL visibility,LTL visibility,Ocean visibility ,Air tracking and Project based API connectivity for: project44 add on for Rail visibility ,project44 add on for Parcel tracking.
What I don't see is Freight Forwarder Scenario for GTT. is this considered in Scope. Please advice.
Thanks
Naga
Hi Naga,
P44 does also integrate Freight Forwarders. If looking for a specific freight forwarder, the best approach might be to contact P44 together with the customer running the LBN project.
Kind regards,
Thomas
Great blog Thomas.
where can we get a detailed end-to-end scenario for the SAP event management?
Dear Thomas,
Thanks a lot for the blog, It helped me to get the latest information for event management.
I wanted to get some details about the conversion projects for migrations from Event Management 9.2(or 9.0) to SAP S/4 HANA EM. What would be different steps for conversion project ? Do we need to re-configure everything in SAP S/4 HANA ? Can you please guide who can help with this information?
Also are there any alternatives to Event Management 9.2(or 9.0) in SAP S/4 HANA other than SAP S/4 HANA EM or SAP GTT ? ( may be event mesh or event bus if it could be used to achieve same results as Event Management)
Thanks!
