BTP Learning for You: Full-Stack Apps with CAP and HANA

Each week, we will highlight some of the many tutorials related to SAP Business Technology Platform in the SAP Tutorial Navigator — from development with CAP, to creating Launchpad sites, to creating mobile apps, to using BTP services for workflows and internet of things.

And since this is the SAP Tutorial Navigator, all of the tutorials let you keep track of which steps you’ve done and to indicate that you have completed each section. Once you complete an entire tutorial mission, you will earn a badge.

The Background

This week we will talk about our very first “cross-topics” tutorial – written by Thomas Jung — showing you how to to build applications by combining SAP HANA Cloud, SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Business Application Studio, and the Cloud Application Programming Model to build full-stack apps.

First, some background. I’m sure many of you have seen the presentation by Thomas Jung. Here is the YouTube video where he goes through some essential steps to start using SAP Business Application Studio as your development tooling.

If you are beginning your journey to build extensions in the SAP Business Technology Platform, then you are going to need to become familiar with the technologies covered in this cross topic tutorial.

And not just familiar in isolation, but in how they all work together.

SAP HANA Cloud will provide your persistence and data management functionality. SAP Cloud Application Programming Model is the framework SAP provides for data modeling, service enablement and UI annotation creation.  And finally SAP Business Application Studio is the development tooling and integrated environment that SAP provides for you to perform nearly all the development tasks in SAP BTP.

The Tutorial

To help you put all your knowledge together, Thomas has created a tutorial for you to complete (and a badge to earn on completion), called Combine CAP with SAP HANA Cloud to Create Full-Stack Applications.

The tutorial is organized in a simple way, in 3 clear sections:

  • How to set up the CAP project and SAP HANA Cloud
  • How to create a full-stack app using CAP and SAP HANA Cloud
  • How to add native SAP HANA Cloud artifacts (like calculation views) to your application

Finally, here is a video of Thomas going through the tutorial for creating a CAP project:

Enjoy!
