Coronavirus Crisis and How It Promotes Digitization in Manufacturing and Networking

For years, we have all been hearing about the need for the companies in all sectors of the economy to digitize and start applying networking approaches to their business models, because it brings innumerable advantages over competition for those who do it. However, most business owners tend to take digitization as something that happens to other people – it may be a nice thing in theory. Still, it is expensive, disruptive for their routine work processes, and isn’t it better to wait until it gets cheaper and more reliable?

COVID-19 pandemic changed this. Something that most considered only theoretically useful suddenly became a matter of life and death. With most of the world under enforced lockdown, anything that can help businesses continue working, even in an unfamiliar fashion, is a godsend. Digital transformation is no longer a gimmick – it is a matter of survival. But how exactly does coronavirus change the way we do things, and will these changes remain in effect once the storm passes? Let’s find out.

1.    Forced Digitization and Networking

The current crisis plays a unique role in the lives of traditionally conservative sectors that previously were not known for digitization, like possibility to streamline your workflow with a CNC machining service. Either because they did not see immediate benefits from it or had to go through too great inconveniences to achieve it. For them, now it is to digitize or die, and they rapidly look for ways to make things work, no matter how alien it may seem for them.

So, digital manufacturing allows industrial manufacturers to –

  • shorten time to market
  • eliminate bottlenecks
  • turn up quickly to meet customer requirements
  • expand the number of products made.
  • improve quality

2.    Globalization of Job Market

There is not much reason for businesses to look for employees in their geographical locations with all who can do it working from home. If you are going to communicate via a videoconference anyway, why limit yourself to local hires while you have the entire globe’s worth of experts at your disposal? While your registered office address may play some role in legal and financial matters, it no longer has to determine where you look for employees. For businesses, it means greater choice. For applicants, it means increased competition – now they have many more other candidates to outshine.

3.    Drive for 5G Tech

The sudden spike in demand for remote interaction made it obvious that we need worldwide adoption of 5G tech, with its transmission speed and almost instantaneous communication even with the most remote parts of the world.

4.    Teleconferencing and Telehealth

As office members now have to interact remotely, stable, the need for high-quality communication software that allows for immediate interaction between more than just a few people simultaneously became more obvious than ever. The strain on the healthcare system and the general danger associated with visiting medical facilities under an increased risk of contracting COVID-19 calls for rapid improvement in telehealth systems that would allow physicians to diagnose illnesses remotely and work with patients without having to be physically near them.

5.    Cashless Payment Adoption

While WHO is still unsure whether there is any real risk of coronavirus spreading with cash, they still recommend using contactless payment methods. With the majority of the population staying at home, the need to give clients as many ways to pay remotely as possible became more critical than ever.

6.    Paperless Offices

As most businesses physically moved from offices, using paper becomes less and less viable an option. Many businesses will be forced to adopt new ways of storing information and interacting with their employees before the crisis is over.

7.    Cybersecurity Mesh

A new level of cyber complexity to factories arises with the rise of digital technologies. But the question is, do the manufacturing companies have enough cybersecurity programs in place to prepare for these expanded risks?

Cybersecurity allows anyone to access any digital asset security. It doesn’t matter where the person or asset is located. It’s anticipated that the cybersecurity mesh will support more than half of the digital access control request by 2025.

Several assets now exist outside the usual security perimeter. Cybersecurity mesh is a distributed architectural approach to flexible, scalable, and reliable cybersecurity control.  The cybersecurity mesh permits the security perimeter to be defined around the identity of a thing/person.


As the operations continue to evolve anywhere, the cybersecurity mesh will become the most practical approach to make sure there’s secure access to, and use of, cloud-located applications and distributed data from uncontrolled services.

While the coronavirus pandemic wreaks havoc with people’s lives all over the globe, it seems to be driving innovation, especially in the form of digitization, faster than any conscious efforts on the part of both business owners and engineers.
