SAP Analytics Cloud In-story Calculation Series – Blog6: Group customers by the average time-to-delivery

Your logistic department wants to group customers by the average time-to-delivery:

Time-to-delivery>=10days Delayed Delivery
Time-to-delivery 5-9days Normal Delivery
Time-to-delivery 0-4days Fast Delivery

In-story Calculations:

  • Measured-Based Dimension (Classic Account Model) or Value-Based Dimension (New Model)

Measure-Based Dimension or Value-Based Dimension allows you to easily create a new calculated dimension and define the criteria for the dimension members. When there is a large number of dimension members, you can use such in-story calculation to categorize the dimension members by the value of a measure for a better view-time experience.

A typical example can be illustrated by customer classification. We would like to divide customers into three groups according to the value of a measure (Time-To-Delivery). After selecting Time-To-Delivery as the Measure in Calculation Editor, we need to name these customer groups in the “Member Name” area and set the data ranges under the “Measure Values” area accordingly. The Dimension Context we used here is the Customer Name because we’re aggregating the customer names by time-to-delivery. The setting should look like this:

Once this calculation is applied, the chart will assign customers into different categories.

Grouping your customers with average time-to-delivery enables you to immediately recognize the “unhappy customers” from a huge number of customers, which also gives you opportunities to improve their satisfaction by sending out coupons or giving extra discounts…
