I am very happy to introduce our Topic of the Month activities in SAP Community with this blog post. I take this opportunity to first un-zoom from our product, SAP Intelligent RPA, and describe SAP’s broader strategy for low-code/no-code process automation.

Indeed, 6 months ago McKinsey reported that the digitization of companies’ core internal operations, and of their supply chains, has been accelerated by as much as a seven-year increase in the rate of development, on average in 2020. They also state that before then, it would have taken 12-plus months to implement the level of remote working that has been achieved so far, rather than the reported average of 11 days to implement a workable solution.

Ongoing global challenges have become a pressing catalyst for SAP customers to galvanize their transformation efforts. The spotlight is on developing a resiliency that goes far beyond the underlying infrastructure and its move to the cloud. It is all about changing the way companies adapt to new digital business models and drive secure, efficient, intelligent automation. It means giving everyone in an organization the power to re-imagine and re-build smarter, faster, scalable processes.

Process Automation is part of SAP Business Technology Platform

SAP Intelligent RPA is a strategic component of a wider process automation portfolio, increasingly focused on lowering the entry barriers and opening up to so called citizen developers. This 'citizen automation' layer in the SAP BTP includes several solutions:

Of course, SAP process automation  portfoliois closely integrated with business process intelligence offerings (including Signavio recently acquired by SAP), SAP S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, Ariba, Fieldglass, SAP Analytics Suite, SAP Cloud Application Lifecycle Management etc..

Process Automation - from Analysis to Continuous Monitoring

Our aim with SAP process automation portfolio is to provide our customers with seamless integration between the components, and the wider SAP Business Technology Platform capabilities. With our business process intelligence solutions, our customers will benefit from a cutting-edge end-to-end business process transformation portfolio, that covers all relevant steps, i.e., analysis, design, simulation, action, change management and execution, as well as continuous monitoring. So, they will gain the best business outcomes from SAP technology.

To identify which corrective actions will be the most relevant ones, a sound process analysis can provide a clear guidance. Solutions from SAP and Signavio can, among other capabilities mentioned above, help organizations just do that efficiently. Based on pre-defined performance indicators and industry benchmarks, customers can easily prioritize which processes to focus on in order to have the biggest impact on their business goals. They can get a thorough understanding of their current as-is situation, discover bottlenecks, and run deep dive root cause analysis and process mining. Further, they can benefit from tailored recommendations and best practices. In the next stage, customers can collaboratively model and simulate new processes, which will be the basis for concrete improvement actions.

SAP Intelligent RPA combined with SAP Workflow Management allows customers to automate their entire process landscape – from core to extension of core, to long tail and departmental. The fusion of these capabilities enables the user to achieve both speed and agility to their work – something that Robotic Process Automation alone cannot do.

Today the business requires applications to make its workforce productive even under tough conditions. But many IT departments struggle to keep up due to limited resources and the increasing variety of business processes. To tackle this common issue, we democratize process automation with low-code/no-code solutions for citizen developers or “citizen automators” extending into application development with SAP´s low-code/no-code Solutions (AppGyver, SAP Business Application Studio)

Process automation can reach new level of efficiency by leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies, to automate administrative activities, especially related to extracting data from documents. Combining RPA and AI in this way already allows organizations to achieve greater return on investment. Let me give you two examples:

  1. Cathay Pacific Airways, the national flag carrier of Hong Kong, went on an intelligent enterprise journey with SAP by adopting real-time reporting, embedded analytics, API-based integration, and process automation. SAP Intelligent RPA infused with AI capabilities helped Cathay automate its financial processes significantly, bringing direct impact on their operational excellence. Cathay’s exemplary implementation success made them a finalist in SAP Innovation Awards 2021.

  2. Supporting automation with a comprehensive, prepackaged AI platform enabled by SAP Intelligent PPA, SAP Conversational AI, and Service Ticket Intelligence services, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) made it possible to achieve a proof of concept in just 55 days and deploy the full portfolio of IT use cases for the business operations self-healing service in as little as four weeks.

Our customers can also take advantage of pre-built content (bots, live process packages, BTP services) for better value outcomes: they can start fast and achieve cost-effective implementation and deployment via fast start content. To date, more than 200 prebuilt bots are available off-the-shelf from the SAP Intelligent RPA store to help citizen developers automate their tasks in end-to-end business processes such as “order to cash” in finance or “procure to pay” in procurement.
