Until now in SAP HANA Cloud, you could set up an SAP HANA Cloud, data lake only if it was integrated with an SAP HANA Cloud, SAP HANA database instance.

But what if you wanted to set up an SAP HANA Cloud, data lake independently? Well, as of SAP HANA Cloud QRC 01/2021, you can.

But first, let's cover some basics...

What is SAP HANA Cloud, data lake?

You probably already knew that a data lake is a central repository where you can store a mix of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data in its natural format and then analyze, report on, and (machine) learn from the data.

SAP HANA Cloud, data lake is available today as part of SAP HANA Cloud. And indeed, it provides these capabilities across two powerful components:

  • IQ component - provides high-performance analysis for petabyte volumes of relational data.

  • Files component - provides managed access to structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data stored as files in the data lake.

You can now choose to set up SAP HANA Cloud, data lake in two different ways (configurations): managed or the new standalone.

Managed vs. standalone--what's the difference?

Here is a summary of the two SAP HANA Cloud, data lake configurations and how they differ:

  • Managed: This is SAP HANA Cloud, data lake managed by an SAP HANA Cloud database instance. The connection between the SAP HANA Cloud database and this data lake is automatically created. The easiest way to access the data in this managed data lake is using virtual tables via the SAP HANA Database Explorer. However, you can also access this data lake independently using any of the methods mentioned for the standalone data lake.

  • Standalone: This is the SAP HANA Cloud, data lake provisioned independently of any other SAP HANA Cloud services. It is not automatically connected to any SAP HANA Cloud database instances you might have. You access data in this standalone data lake with DBISQL, isql, SAP HANA Database Explorer, or any supported data lake client interfaces.
