SAP HANA Cloud: The Next Generation of SAP HANA in the Cloud

As we discussed in previous blogs in this series, SAP HANA Cloud uses an easy-to-configure pricing metric of Capacity Units and can be consumed in three unique ways. In this final installment, we’ll look at what sets SAP HANA Cloud apart from its predecessor, SAP HANA Service, and examine some of SAP HANA Cloud’s exciting cloud-native features.


The Cloud Journey Continues

When SAP launched SAP HANA Service, customers were able to leverage the power of SAP HANA in a cloud environment. It offered customers an easy-to-understand pricing structure and the familiar functionality of SAP HANA, together with the convenience of the cloud. SAP HANA Cloud builds on the success of SAP HANA Service and marks the next generation of SAP HANA in the cloud with new cloud-native capabilities, increased transparency into total cost of ownership, and multiple cloud-native database services to select from.


Next Level Visibility into Total Cost of Ownership

While SAP HANA Service offered our customers a subscription-based consumption model based on fixed blocks of memory, SAP HANA Cloud takes that a step further by offering increased granularity and insight into consumption based on actual usage. The result is complete transparency into total cost of ownership and flexibility to control how and where cloud database services are allocated.

SAP HANA Cloud achieves this in two ways: firstly, by allowing users to select the specific cloud-native database services they wish to consume, and secondly, by providing the ability to drill down into each cloud-native database service to configure and monitor usage of CPU, Memory, and Storage individually.

For example, unlike SAP HANA Service where a user only has the option to store their data in-memory and is billed at a monthly rate, the cloud-native database services available in SAP HANA Cloud provide users the ability to allocate data amongst multiple cloud database services, billed hourly. This allows users to manage and prioritize data storage, providing increased flexibility and budget control. While users can still harness the power of SAP HANA’s in-memory technology using SAP HANA Cloud, they are now also able to store less frequently accessed data in the native storage extension or data lake services, providing increased cost savings.

Furthermore, SAP HANA Cloud also allows users to drill down into individual cloud database services to monitor consumption of memory, CPU, and storage usage based on hourly rates. This means users can allocate and adjust their cloud database consumption to fit their specific workloads, desired performance, and budgetary requirements rather than simply selecting blocks of memory to be stored and charged at a fixed monthly rate, as was the case with SAP HANA Service.

More than Just SAP HANA in the Cloud

As we’ve seen, a major step up for SAP HANA Cloud users is the ability to allocate data amongst multiple cloud-native database services. In other words, SAP HANA Cloud is more than just SAP HANA: it offers a fully integrated platform of cloud-native database services which users can consume on-demand. And not only does SAP HANA Cloud allow users to dynamically manage these services under a single consumption metric of Capacity Units, but it also continues to evolve with new services being added regularly.

For example, in March of 2021, SAP announced the release of several new cloud-native services for SAP HANA Cloud: SAP HANA Cloud, adaptive server enterpise; SAP HANA Cloud, adaptive server enterprise replication; and SAP HANA Cloud, data lake. These services immediately became available for all SAP HANA Cloud users at launch, offering even more options to manage data in the cloud.

Importantly, the release of these cloud-native services for SAP HANA Cloud marked a new home in the cloud for several proven on-premise database technologies with long-established reputations: SAP IQ (SAP HANA Cloud, data lake), a great low-cost storage option to ingest, store, and analyze massive data volumes; SAP ASE (SAP HANA Cloud, adaptive server enterprise), known for its high-performance, low latency engine to support highly resource-efficient transactional data processing; and SAP Replication Server (SAP HANA Cloud, adaptive server enterprise replication), which facilitates data replication and integration across data landscapes.

And perhaps most important of all, when compared to on-premise SAP ASE and SAP IQ in bring-your-own license (BYOL) scenarios, SAP HANA Cloud provides up to a 50% reduction in projected monthly costs.* As database technology continues its move towards the cloud, SAP HANA Cloud ensures that users are well-prepared for the future.
