As of February 2021, the content definitions for the database platform IBM Db2 on i as well as the operating system IBM i are officially part of the Technical Monitoring Cockpit (TMC).

Maybe you have already heard about TMC, but if not, just consider TMC as monitoring tool complementary to the DBA Cockpit for IBM i.

TMC can be positioned as another monitoring tool that allows you to analyze problems in an exploratory way using mainly the “Data Explorer”. The “Data Explorer” is a component within TMC that lets you discover the root cause of a problem using techniques like drill-down, filtering and sorting to aid you in the analysis.

TMC offers a user interface based on SAPGUI and another Web user interface similar to a SAP Fiori application, where both of them behave in a similar way. It has also an integrated documentation and it lets you save a “Data Explorer view” locally as a favorite for a future use.

In comparison to the DBA Cockpit for IBM i, TMC offers more flexibility during the exploration of the root cause of a problem. Its purpose is neither to replace the DBA Cockpit for IBM i nor to be an administrative tool for the platform. Like the DBA Cockpit, TMC can be installed on one SAP system and then be configured to monitor the technology components (i.e.: DB, Hosts) of the SAP Systems in your landscape. However, be aware that the Application Server ABAP monitoring capabilities are available for the local SAP system only.

If the previous words were enough to catch your attention and you would like to give a try to TMC with the content related to the IBM i platform, I guess your next question is: how can I get it? The answer to this question is simple and it depends on the support package level of your SAP NetWeaver system:

  • If TMC 2.0 is available in your system, you must update your local TMC to the content version 02.1909.0000. SAP Note 2721488 - Technical Monitoring Cockpit Version 2.0 is a good starting point to get the information related to this process, because it lists the so called Transport-based Correction Instruction (TCI) content update SAP Notes.

  • If TMC 2.0 is not available in your system, you can get TMC 2.0 into your system by applying the TCI SAP Note associated with your SAP NetWeaver release as described in SAP Note 2721488 – provided your support package level is the same or higher than the minimum required level documented in the SAP Note.

For a detailed documentation of the TMC, visit the Technical Monitoring Cockpit documentation in the SAP Help Portal.

Finally and to avoid already known problems during the usage of TMC 2.0 with content version 02.1909.0000, we kindly recommend you to install the correction instructions attached to these SAP Notes:

2818920 - Technical Monitoring Cockpit: Documentation Updates

2894098 - TMC: No systems from technical monitoring cockpit 1.0 and no local content
