A collaborative article by bloog Consulting’s Managing Partners Sahar Lemanczyk, Alexis Pangalos, and Stefan Wiech together with SAP’s Industry Solution Manager s.sauer.

In a series of four discussions, the team of bloog and I dove into the application of cloud solutions in the maritime industry. This interactive article wants to give you a better understanding of cloud solutions and how they are applicable in a business context in the port industry.

Cloud what?

Before going into detail on cloud solutions for ports, we want to build a common understanding on the definition of cloud solutions.

Alexis Pangalos and Sahar Lemanczyk discuss the facets of cloud and its potential for businesses. Is it really as good as it seems?

Now that we know that cloud not only covers the technical infrastructure, but offers a different approach to building applications, we would like to know how SAP as a software provider uses the cloud.

Can I have my own private cloud?

Software providers offer different types of cloud solutions. In our conversation, Sahar Lemanczyk and I shed light on the different cloud offerings companies can choose from and their respective pros and cons.

As you have heard, auxiliary processes can be well supported with public cloud solutions, while for the core processes of a business, a private cloud solution may be the best architecture. What does that imply for terminals and ports?

Can there be a cloud-native TOS?

Although the industry still tends to rely on private cloud solutions, the implementation of a cloud-native (or public cloud) Terminal Operating System (TOS) is what Stefan Wiech and Alexis Pangalos envision.

Now that we know what cloud-native TOS holds for the future, we take a closer look at another area of the industry, the port community.

Is a PCS predestined for the cloud?

Port Community Systems (PCS) where developed at a time when cloud technology was hardly existing. I discuss with Stefan Wiech if future PCS would be offered as-a-service.

As a conclusion one could say the port industry has many innovative opportunities ahead of them. SAP and bloog are looking forward to support the industry in seizing them.
