Internet Explorer 11 will no longer be supported by various SAP UI technologies in newer releases

This blog post highlights the end of support for Microsoft legacy browsers Internet Explorer 11 and Edge Legacy by various SAP UI Technologies like Web Dynpro ABAP, SAP GUI for HTML, SAPUI5, WebClient UI and Business Server Pages (BSP) and the recommended activities for our customers.

What?

SAP UI Technologies supports a range of browsers and platforms e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft New Edge (Chromium) and Safari. For details see the Product Availability Matrix of SAP Netweaver or S/4HANA.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 and Microsoft Edge Legacy (EdgeHTML) are legacy products with limited maintenance from Microsoft. Both will not be supported by future Web Dynpro ABAP, SAP GUI for HTML, WebClient UI, BSP and SAPUI5 versions.

When?

The end of support of Internet Explorer 11 was announced earlier in the SAP Note “1672817 – Browser: Microsoft Legacy Edge and Internet Explorer Support Policy Note”.

Specifically, this means

  • Web Dynpro ABAP no longer supports Internet Explorer 11 starting with SAP_UI 7.56
  • Floorplan Manager for Web Dynpro ABAP no longer supports Internet Explorer 11 starting with SAP_UI 7.56
  • SAP GUI for HTML no longer supports Internet Explorer 11 starting with Kernel 7.85 used in S/4 HANA Cloud 2105, S/4HANA 2021 or newer
  • SAPUI5 no longer supports IE11 starting with SAPUI5 1.88 (2104).
See blog post SAPUI5 versions will no longer support Microsoft’s legacy browsers
  • Business Server Pages no longer supports Internet Explorer 11 starting with SAP_BASIS 7.56 used in S/4HANA 2021 or newer
  • SAP Netweaver Business Client for HTML (NWBC for HTML) no longer supports Internet Explorer 11 starting with SAP_UI 7.56
  • WebClient UI no longer supports Internet Explorer 11 starting with S/4 HANA Cloud 2105, S/4HANA 2021 or newer

Support for the Microsoft Edge Legacy (EdgeHTML) browser will be discontinued on March 9th, 2021, since Microsoft discontinued support for it on that date.

As a result, to name a few, the following product releases will no longer support Internet Explorer 11:

  • SAP S/4HANA Cloud 2105
  • SAP S/4HANA 2021
  • SAP Integrated Business Planning for Supply Chain 2105
  • SAP Marketing Cloud 2105

Note that this is not an exhaustive list of products which will discontinue Internet Explorer 11 support.

This does not affect any support statements for the new Microsoft Edge (Chromium) browser, see SAP Note 2884143.

Older S/4HANA or Suite releases are not affected by the de-support of Internet Explorer 11 until Microsoft will remove the Internet Explorer 11 support on June 15, 2022. As SAP support ends latest with end of support by the vendor, SAP stops the Internet Explorer 11 support for these OS combinations on June 15,2022.

Why?

Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 and Microsoft Edge Legacy (EdgeHTML) are legacy products, which do not fulfil the requirements of a modern browser regarding features, security, performance, etc. Microsoft has limited the support for both products and recommends transitioning to the new Microsoft Edge browser.

Microsoft stops the support for Internet Explorer 11 on June 15, 2022 for various OS combinations.

To ensure a secure environment for running business-critical solutions, SAP recommends using the latest version of a modern and secure browser.

Recommended Action and Upgrade Strategy

SAP always recommends using the latest version of a modern, supported browser e.g. Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.

Until your environment is updated to a supported browser, you may:

  • use the Internet Explorer legacy mode in MS New Edge (Chromium);
  • stay on a long-term maintenance release of Web Dynpro ABAP with SAP_UI 7.54, together with SAPUI5 version 1.71 in combination with Frontend Server 6.0 (FES 6.0).

Should you be unable to move away from Internet Explorer 11, then it is essential that you do not upgrade to SAP_UI 7.56, since all SAP systems using SAP_UI 7.56 will not support Internet Explorer 11.

Former versions of SAP GUI for Windows uses always the Internet Explorer 11 to display HTML content within SAP GUI for Windows. As of the release 7.70 the SAP GUI for Windows supports Microsoft Edge (Chromium) as an alternative browser. Please see SAP Note 2913405 – SAP GUI for Windows: Dependencies to browsers / browser controls”.  Upgrade to SAP GUI for Windows 7.70 and configure it to use Microsoft WebView2 control (Edge based on Chromium).

      Hello Thorsten

      we use the Icweb (CRM7 ehp3, SAP_UI : 7.53) & SAPUI5 applications (1.60.30)

and we are discovering today your nice blog as all our fiori apps got stucked with

we are still using IE11 as we use a lot activeX for MS office integration, and ICweb with CTI integration ..

Edge is under consideration but we were refering to OSS 1672817.

As per our understanding of this note + PAM matrix, we were still ok ...

Yet, since 22/04/21 we are not ...

Do you have an idea of the component which got limited on the 22/04/2021 ?

      🙂

      Thanks for any ideas ..

      Regards

      Thierry

      Hi Thierry,

the IE11 support for older releases remains which includes the version you mentioned. The error message indicates that it is a UI5 application or coming from the Fiori Launchpad (FLP). Are you using the cFLP (Central Fiori Launchpad) or is used UI5 version is higher than 1.60?

If not please open an incident at the corresponding application / UI5 component.

      Regards Thorsten

Thanks Thorsten for your feedback. We don't use the cFLP.

we solved our pbs by adding

       src="https://sapui5.hana.ondemand.com/1.87.3/resources/sap-ui-core.js"

in each of our SAPUI5 apps.

Without forcing the release, the system is taking the last one available and this was changed on the 22/04 😉

      Regards

      Thierry

Thanks for posting the "error message" / info notice that one is going to see. I was missing an "How?" paragraph in the blog post and was specifically wondering about how users of older browsers are getting informed.

Could someone also provide the URL to the link after "For more information, see..."?

Also: is there something like Microsoft's search terminology for strings/messages available for SAP products? It turns out to be really useful when localizing backwards in order to find answers to questions not available e.g. in German.

      Hi Thorsten,

we are performing our annual SAP HR patching and upgraded to SAP_UI 753 PL 10.

In testing the WDA in EP, we encounter now issues of blank pages being displayed.

The same WDA works in Chrome and Edge.

We thought IE 11 will not be supported as of SAP_UI 756.

Can you please shed some light on this puzzle?

      Thanks and with best regards,

      Mathias

      Hi Mathias,

Please open an incident as the issue could have various root causes e.g. running portal in IE11 Quirks Mode which isn‘t supported with SAPUI 7.53. We need more information to provide a fast and correct answer.

You are right IE11 support was stopped with SAP_UI 7.56.

      Best regards Thorsten

      Hi Thorsten,

thank you for the super fast reply. I think you are right our EP is older (NW 7.0 SP 18) and defaults to Quirks Mode and as far as we can tell it cannot be changed.

We got our hopes up when we found SAP Note 1737445, but prerequisite is NW 7.0 SP 28&27.

Nevertheless I opened incident 610777 / 2021, hoping there might be another workaround.

Currently it is not feasible for us to upgrade EP to a higher release since we would have to upgrade our BW system in parallel.

      Thanks and with best regards,

      Mathias

      Hi Mathias,

I can only recommend to upgrade your portal as it is already out of maintenance. Microsoft will stop IE11 support mid of 2022 for Windows 10 which makes it even more complicated.

Our experts will check your message.

      Best regards Thorsten

      Hi Thorsten

I'm currently performing testing to support the upgrading of our SAP GUI to 770, part of the reason to perform the upgrade is to enable changing of the Default Browser to Edge as our BW 7.3 SP15 application has a default browser of IE which is AOL in June 2022. As part of the testing I also had IE removed from my machine. I have now discovered that none of our java/web components (e.g. Portal, web reports, etc) function as they were running in Edge but in IE compatibility mode, which I have since learnt is dependent on having IE installed.

We are also in the early stages of deploying on to a new greenfield SAP BW4 platform but this will not be ready for some time and so we are looking for work arounds to keep the existing BW functionality / reporting capability going until a time when we can decommission the whole legacy system.

Any solution suggestions would be gratefully received!

      Kind regards,

      Terry

      Hi Terry,

I apologize but it is hard for me to answer your questions as I would need more input.

To my understanding IE11 as standalone browser will be removed but the IE11 compatibility mode within Edge remains. You could configure Edge so that certain web pages opens in IE11 compatibility mode. But please contact for these questions your Microsoft support as they can give you the most correct answers or check the links in my blog like What is Internet Explorer mode? | Microsoft Docs

I would propose to reach our to your SAP contact (e.g. TQM) and follow up on your questions.

      Best regards

Thanks Thorsten, it appears to be an Edge SSO integration issue as I have managed to prove the IE compatibility mode does work. I'll raise with SAP.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Thorsten - Can I ask what Solution Manager comes under for changes in this area?  Currently SolMan is hard coded to bring up IE as of release 720 SP 0007 and it can't be changed by the user which is why I'm asking about this.

In other words, what version of Solution Manager would someone need to migrate to in order to use a browser other than IE.  If I am mistaken about the hard coding of the browser, what needs to be done to allow for browsers other than IE on the above mentioned version.

      Thorsten;

FYI - for you and anyone else - I found this article about version 7.70 of the GUI that appears to resolve the issue - we are about to migrate to that version and I will post here if it works.  Here is the article in question:

Thanks Thorsten. On 06/15 onwards IE wont be supported , does that mean the supports ends or the Web Dynpro ABAP itself will stop working and wont open with IE anymore. We are in process or upgrading to 770 along with Edge as default browser but may need few more week of testing.

      Can you please confirm.

      Hi Rahul,

technically it depends on the WD ABAP version. For older releases until SAP_UI 7.54 the support for Edge in IE11 mode remains. IE11 standalone will not be supported anymore once Microsoft stops the support. We do not plan to prevent technically IE11 standalone.

In higher releases the IE11 support including Edge running in IE11 was already removed.

      Best regards Thorsten

      Hi Thorsten,

we have NWBC 7.0 with IE Browser which runs a Java Applet (Gantt) for PPM. I know this is going away but we currently cannot update our ERP to a suitable SP in short term to get the UI5 Version

When trying the same with NWBC 7.7 with IE Browser the applet doesn't start.

I tried with Edge IE Mode, which works fine standalone without NWBC, but doesn't work (start the applet) within NWBC

Any clues if the following should or shouldn't work?

      1. IE Browser on NWBC 7.7
      2. Edge with enabled IE Mode GPO on NWBC 7.7

      Many thanks and Cheers

      Hi Jens,

just to answer your question also in this thread.
In general the SAP Business Client 7.0 and 7.70 should be have identical regarding IE11 support. Please refer to the thread SAP Business Client 7.70 | SAP Blogs.

      Thanks Thorsten

      Hi,

We have workflow process which interact with the users. The process is mostly safe from any changes to the browser, but there are steps where a MS Word document is edited by the user in the Business Client. At the moment the Word document is accessed via an ActiveX control, so only works when Internet Explorer is defined as the browser in the Business Client.

We totally understand that IE needs to go away and SAP needs to move away from it, but now we aren't sure what options are available to access a Word Document so that the user can review and edit it as part of the workflow process from their inbox within the business client (Web Dynpro).

Any notes to look at for the migration? We have a few months to do it in-house or buy in alternative solution.

      Hi Thorsten,

I have a question about this point:

Former versions of SAP GUI for Windows uses always the Internet Explorer 11 to display HTML content within SAP GUI for Windows

All the former versions can use Internet Explorer 11? We are having issues when some users try to open a fiori webpage within SAP GUI, we detected that some users with SAPGUI 7.40 patch level 3 can't view the webpage, we used the browser developer tools and there's an error when executing SAPUI 5 script, it seems that internet explorer 9 is used in this HTML viewers. For other users with a bit less older version, 7.40 patch level 6, it seems that internet explorer 11 is used. Are we missing some config to allow the users with the older SAPGUI version to use internet explorer 11? Or older SAPGUI versions use internet explorer 9 and we can't change to the desired version?

      Thank you 🙂

SAPGUI 7.40 is obsolete for more than 4 years. Even SAPGUI 7.60 is out of support since April 2022.

You should upgrade to SAPGUI 7.70.

      Dear Jordi,

I strongly recommend to upgrade to SAP GUI for Windows version 7.70 or to the highest available version. The SAPGUI version 7.40 is out of support since many years.
Please refer to SAP Note 147519 - Maintenance strategy / deadlines for SAP GUI for Windows / SAP GUI for Java - SAP ONE Support Launchpad.

Internet Explorer 11 support is stopped completely for many products as Microsoft stopped the IE11 support.

SAP GUI for Windows Version 7.70 offers MS Edge (WebView2) as additional browser control and should be used for all SAPUI5 or Web Dynpro applications.
For more information about SAP GUI for Windows Version 7.70 please refer to SAP Note 2796898 - New and changed features in SAP GUI for Windows 7.70 - SAP ONE Support Launchpad.

We explained to the customer that they are using an outdated SAPGUI version and they agree to update SAPGUI, but it will not happen immediatly, we are trying to find a solution until they deploy the update to the users.

I know that there is no support for this SAPGUI version so i really appreciate you spend some time to answer my question.

      Thank you.
