November 25-27, 2020

Presentations and recordings (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3)

On November 25-27, we delivered a virtual SAP MaxAttention Innovation Workshop sharing the latest details and experiences for “Migrate & Operate SAP Landscape on Hyperscalers”. This workshop provides our SAP MaxAttention customers a prescriptive harmonized set of recommendations and guidance leveraging industry best practices on their journey to hyperscalers.

The agenda for this workshop can be found here.

The first day started with the vision for the multi-cloud architecture supporting the journey to the Intelligent Enterprise. In this session, we presented a holistic view of multi-cloud architecture, possible transition roadmaps, and the impact to a technical solution with each transition step in the areas of technical architecture, security, integration and software change management.

Cloud transition as a step-by-step approach

Next, we offered an overview for the integration architecture in a multi-cloud environment including technical integration scenarios. We spoke about typical integration challenges and the integration journey in a multi-cloud environment. Further, the integration assessment as an interface repository and tooling support for SAP S/4HANA transition (SAP’s API first strategy) was presented. With the integration strategy, we introduced the SAP integration Solution Advisory Methodology. In regard to the integration design, we focused on the interface design with the AI-driven integration advisor tool.

Integration journey in a multi-cloud landscape

Following the session around integration, we continued with a session about the cloud transition journey with a SAP-managed private cloud. In this session, we spoke about different cloud models and reviewed the cloud portfolio.

SAP-managed private cloud

SAP-managed private cloud provides a secure customer integration and isolation technology. It also offers very high end-to-end application SLA, leveraging SAP reference architecture (Premium SLA 99,9%). Based on a shared responsibility model it also covers all necessary security, transparency and compliance business requirements.

Summary of key capabilities of SAP-managed private cloud

Concluding the first day of the workshop, we discussed how to build the bridge for continuous delivery in agile and hybrid solutions using Change Control Management.

The integrated intelligent suite is more reliable due to a higher degree of automation. IT has to cope with the increasing complexity and the high rate of change. Change management is key to be owned by IT. DevOps speeds it up to get services faster to the market and to drive growth higher while at the same time increasing efficiencies in development and deployments. Change Management in SAP’s integrated intelligent suite needs to fulfill audit requirements.

The second day of the workshop started with the planning session for the technical architecture and infrastructure. We introduced the definition of technical architecture of single systems with focus on hyperscalers. Then, we spoke how to plan a technical architecture on hyperscalers including high availability (HA) / disaster recovery (DR), deployment, technical platform, sizing considerations and more.

Design approach and building blocks

In the second session, we presented the main principals for security and compliance in the multi-cloud environment. We provided key security considerations on hyperscalers. Based on that, we have shown reference architecture examples.

Key topics in hyperscaler scenarios

Concluding the second day of the workshop, we presented the transition approaches to minimize the downtime. Near-zero downtime technology is a SAP service which helps to drastically reduce the downtime of system maintenance events like updates, upgrades of existing SAP ABAP systems or system conversion from SAP ERP to SAP S/4HANA.

The last day of the workshop started with the performance and scalability topic. We reviewed the considerations and pitfalls in a hyperscaler environment.

Hyperscale is the ability of an architecture to scale appropriately as increased demand is added to the system. This involves the ability to seamlessly provision and add compute, memory, networking, and storage resources. Hyperscalers like MS Azure, Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, Alibaba or others are realizing this via cloud computing (IaaS). SAP has partnerships with different hyperscalers. The goal is to jointly define solutions which have the needed performance and scalability required for SAP use cases (OLAP, OLTP, etc.).

Is sizing still important?

Next, we extended our knowledge with the session about automation and orchestration operation on hyperscalers using SAP Landscape Management. The following key use cases have been reviewed: 1. Managing SAP HANA based systems and landscapes; 2. Managing SAP systems deployed in the public cloud; 3. Automating SAP system provisioning activities; 4. Customizing and extending the standard functionality.

Cloud adapters – centrally manage your SAP landscapes deployed in the public cloud

Following, we presented the best practices for business continuity and continuous monitoring on hybrid landscape. Jointly, we explored the capabilities of SAP Cloud Platform for continues automated monitoring and learned how to increase the value for business through continuous improvement.

Changed deployment models require new models of cooperation

We showed how to implement and operate your business applications and configure them to your individual needs. With SAP Solution Manager, you can cover the complete application lifecycle of your IT landscape.

To follow-up the technical architecture and infrastructure session, we extended the focus with the session about resilient SAP solutions in hyperscalers diving into High Availability / Disaster Recovery.

We concluded the workshop with the overview session for the SAP MaxAttention service portfolio talking about how you can get help from SAP MaxAttention for your hyperscaler transition.
