Learning Environment for SAP S/4HANA System Conversions

In this blog I will introduce our learning environment for SAP S/4HANA System Conversions, a new offering to help you gain practical experience with System Conversions.

Setting up a learning environment for SAP S/4HANA System Conversions can be quite a laborious task. Therefore, we have created a solution that you can quickly deploy to several major cloud infrastructure providers:

  • The solution contains an SAP ERP system, pre-configured to be converted to SAP S/4HANA
  • Typical use cases include openSAP courses, inhouse trainings, customer workshops and personal education
  • It can be deployed quickly and requires that you have a personal account with a cloud infrastructure provider
  • For a System Conversion you need to perform activities in the system that require a background in SAP Basis, SAP Finance, SAP Logistics and ABAP. Therefore, a System Conversion is typically performed by several people.
  • An S-User is needed for the SAP Support Portal and for downloading hands-on guides

The solution includes all system landscape components to perform a System Conversion from an SAP ERP source system on SAP ASE database to an SAP S/4HANA 1909 target system, using HANA 2.0 as a database.

There are several use cases why you would use such a learning environment. For example, for in-house trainings. But our primary intention was to provide a “hands-on” option for our three openSAP courses on System Conversions:

These courses have been extremely popular, and more than 100.000 learners have participated in these courses. We received a lot of feedback form participants asking for a system to practice some of the key concepts from these openSAP courses. This is now possible. The video below provides a short overview.

The system landscape for this solution includes three systems as you can see from the diagram below.

To make the learning experience more realistic, we have prepared several tasks in the SAP ERP system. These tasks are very similar to what you also encounter during a typical System Conversion. The tasks are grouped by competency. The key competencies required to perform a System Conversion are SAP Basis, SAP Finance, SAP Logistics and ABAP.

We offer comprehensive documentation for each task to ensure you can complete the System Conversion successfully. Each task is described in a hands-on guide. In addition, you can refer to the video recording for most tasks.

Some tasks have dependencies to other tasks. This means that some tasks can only be started if the previous task has been successfully completed. Otherwise you might encounter errors later in the System Conversion. You may also encounter errors if some configuration is done in the system which is not included in the hands-on guides.

The best way for you to find out more about the solution is by following the link below to the solution overview page, which also contains the Getting Started Guide.

If you book your own CAL solution instance and have questions about or during the conversion, we are happy to answer those in the context of our openSAP courses and the discussion forum available there. Now, have fun with our new CAL solution and happy learning!

We are using a CAL system and are very happy with the solution. It's been great getting our users hands wet with SAP. Coupled with OnScreen Walkthroughs  it makes it very easy on SMEs and process owners to run through SAP fit to standard processes.

      Hi,

      I see two CAL possibilities….

      Which one to take?

      Thanks, Wallace

      Hi Wallace,

thanks for this very good question. For technical reasons we have to create one CAL solution for each corresponding openSAP course. We know this is confusing, but currently do not have a better option. These CAL solutions are identical. You can choose either of the two solutions.

At the moment you can see two CAL solutions corresponding to the two active openSAP courses.

In general if you navigate to the CAL solution overview page https://cal.sap.com/catalog#/solutions and type "system conversion" in the top right search field you will get a list of all our "System Conversion" CAL solutions. All these solutions are exactly the same. Only the names are different.

      Best Regards Lars

      Hi Lars,

Will this also be provided withing the next month for an conversion to S/4HANA 2020?

Are the steps to be done completely the same as the 10STEPS2S4 Program?

What is the final system - could this be used/or is this like the "fully activated applicance" with master and transactional data to work?

      Thanks and br,

      Robert

      Hi Robert,

      thank you for your question.

      1. We provide an SAP ERP 6 EHP6 SP03 source system in this CAL solution. If you are already familiar with the overall procedure you can convert this to any supported SAP S/4HANA release including 2020.
      2. Yes, the exercises which we prepared in the CAL solution to make the System Conversion experience more realistic are identical to the steps performed in the "10-steps-to-SAP S/4HANA bootcamp for partners/customers"
      3. After converting the SAP ERP from the CAL solution you have an SAP S/4HANA system with master and transactional data. To get it to the same stage as the SAP S/4HANA fully activated appliance you still have to go a long way. It was never our intention to replace the SAP S/4HANA fully activated appliance. Our focus is on the system conversion process. The SAP S/4HANA fully activated appliance is intended as a demo and explore environment.

      Best Regards

      Lars

      Hi Lars Rueter ,

Could you highlight the difference between CAL based conversion and the 10Steps2S4 training conversion?

      Thanks in advance,
      Wouter

      Hi Wouter,

thanks a lot for your question. The foundation of both the CAL based conversion learning system and the 10Steps2S4 offering are the same.

There are differences in the supporting materials to cater for a teaching environment with 10Steps2S4 vs. the CAL based system as a DIY learning environment. We have tuned the system in certain ways for the CAL based conversion to enable participants to perform it in an easier way on their own.

      Best regards,
      Thomas
