On 10th September, SAP was revealed as the winner of “Best Technology for Injury Prevention or Rehabilitation” at the 2020 Sports Technology Awards, a leading global celebration of tech-led innovations in sports.

SAP, partnered with Keytree and Sports & Wellbeing Analytics, faced fierce competition for the trophy, against brands such as AfterShokz, Capenergy Medical, Contego Sports, Empowerban and Enetor. Ultimately, SAP with Keytree and Sports & Wellbeing Analytics emerged victorious with the entry of the PROTECHT Intelligent Mouthguard.

PROTECHT was created to combat head injuries. Using SAP S/4HANA Cloud Platform, these mouthguards are implanted with a hypersensitive sensor system that measures the intensity and frequency of head impacts and reports it in real time to the pitch side team. The system then provides information on collisions that may go unseen or those that are unintended in training environments. The data is then used to change a player’s training or even to pull a player out of a match altogether.

Rebecca Hopkins, CEO of The STA Group, owners of The Sports Technology Awards said, “The Sports Technology Awards have unequivocally become the sector’s ultimate accolade and is recognized as a mark of excellence internationally. We see exciting trends emerge each year and 2020 was no different. Our judges, who are seasoned experts, noted that the sophistication inherent in so many entries were exciting to witness, not least of all in how they are set to change the face of our sector.”

On selecting a winner, the judges commented, “Sport needs more technology to help prevent head injuries and this product is a massive step in the right direction. As a product, it is both innovative and strong, offering impact sports the potential to recognize and understand concussion better. It is so important to reduce the threat of injury and technology like this increases our chances exponentially.”

The full shortlist is available here and the 2021 cycle of The Sports Technology Awards launches on 16th September 2020.
