SAP Business Technology Platform Multi-Cloud Strategy FAQs

In order to address the most commonly asked questions on our multi-cloud strategy and its execution (see blog posts here and here), we have compiled this document.

How long will SAP Cloud Platform, Neo Environment, be maintained?

SAP has not set an end of maintenance date yet.

Will there be any new investment in SAP Cloud Platform, Neo environment?

New services will be only provided on Multi-cloud instead of Neo and SAP will launch more services to further diversify our offerings. Customers and partners will benefit from the additional services only offered on Multi-cloud – such as Business Application Studio, SAP Integration Suite, Process Visibility, ABAP in the cloud and Work Zone.

Does this only impact net new customer / partner contracts?

Can existing customers or partners renew their Neo contracts, or buy more of the same?

SAP places customer relationships and customer success first. Hence, we do understand that we need to provide our customers and partners on Neo a clear path forward, ensuring that the investment is protected and that we guide them along this journey and help them take the next steps. Therefore, SAP will support existing customers and partners as follows:

  1. All existing contracts will be honored and fulfilled without any disclaimer
  2. All existing Neo customers will have the option to renew their running contracts
  3. Up-selling into these accounts, direct through SAP, or indirect through SAP PartnerEdge Sell partners, is possible without restriction.

Does this impact consumption-based contracts (CPEA – Cloud Platform Enterprise Agreement)? If so, how?

CPEA contracts trigger the creation of a new global account that provides access to all eligible services in the respective data centers. New customers will only be able to provision services in data centers that run SAP Cloud Platform, multi-cloud environment. Existing CPEA customers will be able to continue to use services in the data centers they already use, including SAP (Neo) data centers without an additional commercial agreement.

Can I convert my existing contracts? I have already subscribed to Neo-services; will it be possible to trade Neo-services for multi-cloud-services?

Contracts have to meet certain criteria to be eligible for a trade-in. As a customer, please contact your SAP Customer Engagement Executive (CEE). As a partner, please contact your Partner Business Manager.  SAP also understands that some SAP Cloud Platform customers and partners may wish to take advantage of the new consumption-based Commercial Model (CPEA) and trade-in their existing subscription services.

Is there any exception for customers or partners who don’t want to migrate to SAP Cloud Platform, multi-cloud environment?

SAP will not force customers or partners to migrate to SAP Cloud Platform, multi-cloud environment. However, since multi-cloud is SAP’s strategic architecture, SAP recommends to consider this migration.

Do customers need to sign contracts with the hyperscalers?

Where can I find the service availability for SAP Cloud Platform, multi-cloud environment?

Customers and partners can check out the regional and service portfolio here.

What will happen for the services that SAP doesn’t offer SAP Cloud Platform on hyperscalers’ data centers yet?

SAP is taking a two-tier approach to service migration:

  • Most used services and services that are completely or almost functionally equivalent will be moved to the multi-cloud environment.
  • For services that differ considerably in their technical setup und concepts, SAP is going to offer the same business capabilities in the multi-cloud environment.

We provide detailed service comparisons in this blog and the service mapping can be found here.

I have got an EU-only option. Will this be available for SAP Cloud Platform, multi-cloud environment as well?

SAP is aware that this is a key requirement for selected customers and partners. We are working on a solution.

What guidance and help does SAP provide to customers or partners to migrate their applications to SAP Cloud Platform, multi-cloud environment?

When and how to migrate is a scenario-specific question and will be answered case by case. SAP will help customers and partners maximize their migration success with a plan tailored to address the requirements of their business applications. The migration guideline is available here.

Does SAP offer any tools and guidance for migrations?

SAP has set up a dedicated migration project to provide more help and support for our installed base. This migration project includes developing “Migration Packs”.

These contain:

Migration Handbook

  • Describes precisely what needs to be done to migrate the respective service successfully.
  • Will be kept up to date with the latest findings from successful customer migrations.

How-To Guides, Best Practice Guides and FAQs

  • Every service will need specialized approaches dependent on the customer specific implementation.
  • A continuously growing set of assets is documenting and publishing these approaches to keep the discovery effort low.

Migration Tools

  • Migration tools consist of a set of scripts automating as many tasks as possible required to carry out the migration.

SAP currently works on providing migration packs for Portal, API Management, SAP Cloud Platform Integration, HTML5 Apps, Mobile services, SAP HANA, and selected core capabilities like destination and security services or the account model.

How long will SAP HANA 1.0 in SAP Cloud Platform, Neo environment, be supported? How long is the grace period? When will SAP HANA 2.0 be mandated? What does this mean for customers or partners?

The migration from SAP HANA 1.0 to SAP HANA 2.0 must be done by the customer or partner via self-service in the same way as any regular SAP HANA software upgrade. SAP will offer two self-services:

  1. A self-service for the Multi-Tenant Database Containers (MDC) conversion, since SAP HANA 2.0 does only offer MDC, so the SAP HANA size should be 64GB or more.
  2. The existing standard self-service for the upgrade of the SAP HANA database software from SAP HANA 1.0 to SAP HANA 2.0

Please check the note here.

We are using SAP Web IDE for development. Do we need to migrate and start using SAP Business Application Studio?

No. SAP Web IDE is still available for SAP Cloud Platform customers running on the Neo environment in accordance with the maintenance statements given previously in this document. Nothing should change for these customers. With SAP Web IDE, the developers can deploy extensions & new applications on both, Neo and Multi-cloud.

Does SAP Business Application Studio cover all the business scenarios supported by SAP Web IDE?

The story continues to evolve and we are working to improve and extend the tools to provide an enhanced and integrated development experience for native HANA development and across the entire SAP developer ecosystem. We are excited to inform you about the first public release of the HANA development story in SAP Business Application Studio.

Please follow the developer guides below:

What is the guidance from SAP for the customers that already leveraged WebIDE to build extensions on Neo?

For productive usage:

We recommend to try out and use Business Application Studio, as it is the next generation of SAP Web IDE. It offers a modern desktop like experience in the cloud including new tools, capabilities and much more. For more information, take a look at the Business Application Studio central blog. Please note, SAP Web IDE is available and supported.

For trial:

Existing Neo trial can continue using SAP Web IDE Full-Stack on the SAP Cloud Platform, Neo trial environment until November 13, 2020. New trial users on can use SAP Business Application Studio on the SAP Cloud Platform, multi-cloud environment.

Do we have a list of SAP Cloud Platform services supported for High Availability (HA)?

All SAP Cloud Platform services are planned to be HA enabled (meaning available on 3 Availability Zones) by end of 2020. For some services, e.g. SAP HANA, a service request is required when using the HA option.

Do we have a list of SAP Cloud Platform services supported for disaster recovery?

We offer standard and enhanced disaster recovery for SAP HANA on Neo, but we do not plan to offer it on hyperscalers. However, we will provide a HA implementation which can also serve as a first version of disaster recovery and can ensure superior RPO/RTO numbers. In data centers hosted by our partner Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) providers, the provider of the respective data center operates the infrastructure layer and is therefore responsible for handling the Disaster Recovery plan.

Where will my data reside?

SAP is using hyperscaler’s data storage and data persistence services to store the customers’ and partners’ data

Will we discontinue the trial in Neo environment?

The SAP Cloud Platform trial is meant to help users understand the value of the platform and test out new services and innovations. All these aspects are covered in alignment with our multi-cloud strategy. Therefore, new users will not be able to create new Neo trial accounts after August 13th 2020.

There will be a transition period of 3 months for our Neo existing customers before we delete the trial accounts in Neo environment on 13th November. More information can be found in this blog.

What features and services are available on the multi-cloud trial?

For the documentation of trial accounts in the Cloud Foundry environment, please refer to here. For the latest list of services on multi-cloud trial, you can find it here.

  • First of all, I would like to thank SAP for the very generous Neo trial offering, which definitely helped our customers with their decision making with regards to getting a Cloud subscription.

Unfortunately, for our customers that are still running SAP Fiori on-premise, we are using SAP Web IDE from a trial account for Fiori/SAPUI5 development. Are there any alternatives available for SAPUI5 developers supporting customers that currently do not have a Cloud Platform subscription?

    Andre Marasigan

    • Hi Andre,

Existing Neo trial can continue using SAP Web IDE Full-Stack on the SAP Cloud Platform, Neo trial environment until November 13, 2020. We recommend to try out and use Business Application Studio, as it is the next generation of SAP Web IDE. It offers a modern desktop like experience in the cloud including new tools, capabilities and much more. For more information, take a look at the Business Application Studio central blog.

      Best regards,

      • I tried to switched to the Business Application studio but it seems like it is lacking a lot features or at least I don't know where to look for them. For example, where can I build the code in the Business Application Studio? In WebIDE, you can build the code within the MTA like /db or /svc etc.

  • Hi,

Coming from a trial user perspective, what is the official stance on the Cloud Foundry - HANA DB Editor? Saw it is no longer available on the cockpit. Does it mean it we can only connect via Eclipse/HANA client again based on the latest SAP Development tools?

I also cannot open the Web IDE full stack on trial, was hoping to check it there. Cannot see how to create HANA DB objects using Business Application Solution.

    • Hi Francis,

You can continue using your existing Neo trial account including SAP Web IDE Full-Stack until November 13, 2020. This can be done by entering the SAP Cloud Platform trial home page and scrolling down to the Environments section choose “Access Neo Trial” Link and then Services-> SAP Web IDE Full-Stack.

If you are a new trial user:

      1. You can use SAP Business Application Studio on the SAP Cloud Platform, multi-cloud environment (the next generation of SAP Web IDE). It offers a modern desktop like experience in the cloud including new tools, capabilities and much more. To learn more, we have created a central blog with links, useful information and hands-ons. Take a look at this video series for HANA development with Business Application Studio
      2. For HANA native development, you can also use SAP Web IDE for HANA development available on SAP Cloud Platform, multi-cloud environment. This is a temporary solution which is available until HANA development tools will be fully supported in SAP Business Application Studio. See this tutorial

  • HI Experts,

I need some additional information, one of our client is interested in CP integration service in CF and have below queries. Kindly suggest on below.

    1. If Client is using CPI suite on CF ( hosted on underlined azure IaaS) then during DR what is SAP/Client role to get the DR up ? Who disctates the RPO/RTO, is it Azure/SAP/Client ?
    2. As Cloud platform is a iPaaS controlled by SAP so what is the Frequency of replication of data from primary to backup site for Azure hyperscaler ?
    3. There is confusion on the SAP CPI Editions. For example there is some documentation which states CPI (DI Edition, PI Edition, Enterprise Edition) , Also some document states that CPI Suite has ( Basic, Standard and Premium Edition). Please clarify if Enterprise edition is only applicable to Neo where as CPI Suite editions only applicable for Cloud Foundry ?
    4. If client is opted for Standard Edition for CPIS in subcription model ? Can he upgrade to premium edition before the subscription period of existing edition expires? Is the subscription amount will be adjusted from old to new edition ?

      • Hi Shobit,

please find the answers in line below.

        1. SAP manages SAP Cloud Platform Integration Suite running on Cloud Foundry in any hyper scale environment, i. e. SAP is the key contact for sales, support, operational topics, such as RPO and RTO, SLAs etc. Currently we plan to provide enhanced high availability and disaster recovery capabilities as part of our multi-availability zone concept, and for SAP Cloud Platform Integration Suite is currently planned to support multi-availability zones by end of 2020. Further details can be found on SAP Road Map Explorer at
        2. As part of the multi-availability zone concept, which is currently planned to be supported in the SAP Cloud Platform Integration Suite by end of 2020, it is planned to have a synchronous replication of the data between the different multi-availability zones with the goal to have an RPO of 0 minutes.
        3. The different editions of the SAP Cloud Platform Integration Suite, such as basic, standard and premium editions, have just been released in May 2020 and are available on Cloud Foundry only. The previous editions, such as the Enterprise Edition, have been already released on Neo. Customers with existing contracts can continue to extend their existing subscriptions, however no new subscriptions are possible anymore for the previous editions. For new subscriptions “only” the newly released SAP Cloud Platform Integration Suite editions are available, and we strongly recommend to customers to consider a license conversion from their existing contracts to the new SAP Cloud Platform Integration Suite editions
        4. Yes. For further details customers can reach out to their account executive.

        Best regards,
