As supply chains adjust to the uncertain new conditions imposed on them by the COVID-19 pandemic, SAP Integrated Business Planning is starting to take on greater importance than ever before. It creates a holistic viewpoint on demand, inventory, and optimizes forecasting. It creates visibility into logistics, and also integrates with production planning.

We are extremely proud of our team for successfully navigating the very challenging remote working environment and that we were able to deliver the 2008 updates on time: SAP® Integrated Business Planning for Supply Chain 2008 has been generally released as planned. We have compiled SAP IBP team-picked highlights, fully packed with innovations, that we think our customers can leverage to take their supply chain planning to the next level.

Synchronized Planning – Production Planning Integration

Synchronized Planning is a strategic topic for us in SAP Digital Supply Chain and to some of our key customers: While today, in many cases supply chain planning is often siloed and transactional and will not cover several departments and organizations, with synchronized planning, we see the convergence of the different supply chain planning capabilities bringing together supply planning, distribution planning and production planning in one place, enabling a holistic planner’s workspace.

Synchronized Planning supports harmonized Supply Chain Planning from Customer Demand to Deployment, ensuring a consistent planning process vertically and horizontally.

Production Planning Integration is a core piece of synchronized planning supporting the process integration between SAP IBP and SAP S/4HANA ePPDS (available with the SAP S/4HANA 2020 release in Q4).

We are combining SAP IBP and SAP S/4HANA ePPDS planning capabilities by providing a rough cut plan in SAP IBP and fine tune the scheduling in ePPDS. The detailed scheduling results are visible in SAP IBP – thus transparency is guaranteed.

With the 2008 release, we can distinguish planned orders in SAP IBP and SAP S/4HANA ePPDS across SAP IBP and SAP S/4HANA. Detailed scheduling is delegated to ePPDS and a controlled handover process of production planning responsibility is supported from SAP IBP to ePPDS.

Fair Share in Order-Based Optimization

With fair share distribution, planners can make optimal use of available supply in case of shortages and improve their inventory levels in the entire supply chain network. Fair Share distribution is especially beneficial in deployment optimization.

Fair share in optimization in order-based planning supports, on the one hand in situations of undersupply (Fair Share for Demands) so that you don't give all supply to one customer or so that you don't miss the safety stock level in all but one location. On the other hand, it supports in situations with more supply than demand (Fair Share for Inventory), so that you can distribute the surplus in a fair manner among all locations. Planners can now apply fair share when they perform planning runs with the optimizer planning algorithm. It can be separately applied for demands and for inventory (see screenshots).

Next Generation Visibility: View Key Figure Values and Product Networks

Intelligent Visibility supports end-to-end visibility of the supply chain, ensuring that problems can be identified and responded to efficiently. Key Supply Chain data is visualized in a single view and planners can drive action inside and outside of SAP Integrated Business Planning.

In a single view, planners can see their supply chain network with planning data and KPIs to identify and analyze problem areas. The intelligent visibility app visualizes the relationship between input and output products within a location, analyzes historical manufacturing performance and accelerates root-cause analysis impacting plans.

With the 2008 release, the new key figures data layer is available allowing you to display key figure values on geographic maps. The entire product network with all inputs and outputs is displayed and contextual navigation to SAP S/4HANA sales orders and SAP Digital Manufacturing Insights is now possible.

Sales and Operations Planning: Location Product Substitution

You want to discontinue an existing product, phase-in a successor product or plan a promotion? With this new feature, you can satisfy the demand for a leading location product with supply of another (substitute) location product and also vice versa (mutual substitution). The improved discontinuation and promotion planning and execution enables continuous business process flows and optimizes product inventory and availability. At the same time, waste or scrap is minimized by reducing excess and obsolescence.

Planners can specify location product specific substitution business scenarios such as phase-in, phase-out and promotion planning and accomplish different inventory objectives using reason codes such as hard-stop, soft-stop or promotion with validity dates.

You can visualize via key figures how much demand of the leading product was substituted and by which substitute product.

Compare Planning Areas App

The new Compare Planning Areas app allows the comparison of two (sample/customer) planning areas.

It offers a quick and easy way to view the key differences between the most important modeling objects.

Customers can review differences between the latest SAP sample content and their own planning areas, or the changes in their copied development planning area compared to the original one. Thus, users have more control over the content when transporting new planning area enhancements.

Monitor Applications Jobs App

The new ‘Monitor Application Jobs’ app provides an overview of application jobs:

SAP IBP system administrators can now use this app to display an overview of application jobs. The app allows users to monitor, troubleshoot and track application jobs in real-time and to take the necessary actions in case of failures or scheduling delays.

The new app displays all jobs in a user-friendly Gantt chart and the graphical visualization helps in job monitoring and identifying job dependencies. This app is useful in optimizing the job scheduling process. Scheduling issues like failed jobs or long running jobs can be easily identified and necessary measures can be taken.
