SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 05: A Strong Foundation for Continued Innovation
A few months ago, we gave an overview of the planned maintenance schedules for SAP HANA and announced our intent to release SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 05 at the end of June 2020. I am pleased to share with you that SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 05 is now generally available for our customers as of June 26, 2020.
As I mentioned in my previous blog, this is a big year for SAP HANA. We are celebrating 10 years of SAP HANA and the innovations that come with it. SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 05 continues this trend. Therefore, I would like to share a few highlights from SPS 05 with you.
Data replication and distributed processing with SAP HANA Cloud: Every organization’s path to the cloud is different. To help customers ease the transition to the cloud, we added new features that enable replication of data and distribution of processing with SAP HANA Cloud to facilitate hybrid scenarios extending on-premise workloads. Hybrid scenarios help organizations leverage their on-premise investment while still taking advantage of the flexibility of the cloud. SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 05 supports our customers with getting started in the cloud.
Cloud backup integration: We have enhanced our cloud backup integration with an extension that allows you to write backups to and restore your SAP HANA database directly from AWS S3. This improves flexibility and can lead to cost reduction since cloud storage is, in general, one of the most cost-effective storage options.
SAP HANA native storage extension: In SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 05, we have included enhancements to SAP HANA native storage extension to support SAP HANA scale-out systems, increasing the potential scale of deployments. SAP HANA native storage extension is an out-of-the-box capability that you can use to specify how to store hot and warm data, which can help improve your memory footprint. This, in turn, can reduce costs. Since hot and warm data are stored in the same physical table, the implementation is transparent to developers, so there is no need to change the application or operational procedures, including backups, monitoring, or disk layout. This allows for simplified data management and easy and dynamic balancing of the price-performance ratio.
External key server: SAP HANA provides comprehensive encryption, including secure encryption for all data at rest (data volumes, redo log volumes, and backups). As of SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 05, SAP HANA local secure store is available for productive use. This is the foundation for extended key management using external key servers. As a first key server, SAP Data Custodian key management service can now be used to control access to the SAP HANA data encryption keys.
These improvements in backup, recovery, and security key management were designed to offer administrators increased confidence when managing mission-critical systems.
SAP HANA spatial and graph: We have also extended the capabilities of SAP HANA spatial and graph to support advanced analytical processing based on business networks and location-based data to enable the discovery of unique business insights such as supply chain optimizations, retail recommendations, and real-time fraud detection.
Long-term maintenance: Last, but definitely not least, to show our commitment to helping our customers protect and maximize their investments, we decided to include long-term maintenance with SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 05. This maintenance window extends five years after release to customer, until June 2025. It is designed to provide a clear path for our customers using SAP HANA 1.0 SPS12 to plan and carry out their upgrade and allow them to remain on the target version for an extended period of time. We truly believe that providing our customers this stability is the key to continuing innovation with SAP HANA.
Over the past 10 years, we have seen our customers use SAP HANA to deliver business value in amazing and exciting new ways. With the new and enhanced features, SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 05 offers a solid foundation for our customers to continue building on into the future! We look forward to what the next 10 years will bring!

Could you please elaborate on SAP HANA native storage extension functionality. How this is helpful in saving cost ?
SAP HANA with and without NSE
The SAP HANA native storage extension, available beginning with SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 04, offers you the possibility to keep warm data on disc and access it using a buffer cache, which makes up about 10% of the total warm memory. Before SAP HANA SPS 04, you stored the total warm data in DRAM. With the native storage extension, you are optimizing DRAM to be used for hot data only. In addition, you are not limited by the maximum size of DRAM on your server because you can extend the size of the database storing warm data in the data volume (you need additional disc space). This could allow you to stay with an existing server, and you do not have to buy a bigger server.

Can the AWS S3 connector be utilised to connect to other S3 Providers, for example the Pure Storage FlashBlade.
no this is not possible. This adapter is specialized for the AWS S3 variant.
Does SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 05 supports Multi SID?
