SQL Data Warehousing: On-Premise or in the Cloud

SAP HANA has been powering SQL data warehousing for years. SAP HANA for SQL Data Warehousing is a solution that uses open SQL standards. It enables customers to combine any tool or technology they want to create a custom “best of breed” data warehousing solution.

Leveraging SAP HANA for SQL Data Warehousing requires you to have existing in-house SQL knowledge so you can build a SQL data warehouse and its architecture yourself. SAP HANA for SQL Data Warehousing is also primarily an on-premise solution, although it also supports the SAP Cloud Platform environment.

Now with SAP Data Warehouse Cloud, you don’t have to pick between the cloud and on-premise data warehousing or between modeling your data with SQL or graphical tools. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud connects easily to on-premise systems and lets you model with SQL or with graphical tools.

To get started, if your objects are in a git repository, you’ll need to clone the git repository into Web IDE. Any models that have been created in Web IDE for an existing on-premise data warehouse, like SAP HANA for SQL Data Warehousing, can be deployed in SAP Data Warehouse Cloud. To do so, you’ll need to configure your Web IDE and give SAP Data Warehouse Cloud access to the appropriate objects through a HANA Deployment Infrastructure (HDI) container (find out more here).

The Benefits of Going Hybrid with SAP Data Warehouse Cloud

Reusing your existing models and connecting easily to your on-premise data warehouse are just a few ways that SAP Data Warehouse Cloud helps you set up quickly and respond to business users faster.

SAP Data Warehouse Cloud empowers business users to connect, visualize, and model data themselves with either SQL or graphical tools. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud’s Business Layer maps business terminology to your underlying data so that business users can understand the data.

Spaces then let business users drill down on the data without worrying about making changes to the data layer. They can establish connections to new data sources, upload local files, and model data before sharing real-time insights without affecting the integrity of the underlying data.

All of this means that your business users can do more themselves once SAP Data Warehouse Cloud is connected to your on-premise systems. For example, if you like the changes business users have made to a model, it’s easy to jump in at any time to enhance it for reuse throughout the entire organization.
