Top of Mind Concerns for the CDO:

Short & Long-Term Implications of COVID-19 on Enterprise Data Management

Held Thursday, April 30th at 10 a.m. EST

Available from SAP Technology page on LinkedIn at http://bit.ly/2THFMNb

During the session, Justin Litz, Vice President of Analytics and Data Innovation at SAP, Tina Rosario, Head of Data Innovation and Chief Data Officer, Europe at SAP, and Maria Villar, Head of Enterprise Data Strategy and Transformation at SAP, discussed where they see the short and long-terms impacts COVID-19 on data management organization and strategy.  The topics that were discussed included:

Speed to Value

As a Chief Data Officer (CDO), monitoring change and quickly adapting data strategies and tactics is vitally important. Working with the respective business leaders to understand changes in business priorities and the ability to provide new data and data management approaches while remaining vigilant to ensure high-quality data is readily available and security and privacy maintained should be a key theme.

Adaptive Insights and Predictive Analytics

As business priorities change and the need to rapidly take business decisions evolve, so does the importance of predictive analytics. Actively engaging with their Data Science community, the CDO can support them by understanding data and data management requirements that help will develop or evolve existing models. Additionally, identifying and providing new data coupled with existing data helps to unlock new and adaptive insights.

Driving Operational Efficiencies via Data Literacy

In today’s fast changing world, it is critical that a business understand, interpret and use the data assets available to them. Another part of the CDO’s mission must include establishing or evolving data literacy programs within the organization. Helping business teams harness their data assets and the responsiveness to adjust the collection and communication of these valuable resources are extremely relevant to support the improved efficiencies needed within the organization in times of change.

Data Quality and Readiness

As companies have had to react with lighting speed to their response to the pandemic,  CDOs should be immediately, assessing and addressing the data completeness and data quality of their employee, supplier and customer data needed in order to serve the business processes and the analytics that are necessary to respond.  CDOs should also be working with the company’s response team to determine new data that may be needed and acquiring this data quickly and reliably from trusted sources.  In addition, CDOs should re-evaluate the ‘data that matters’ most to a company, given these new demands, assess the data management capability gaps that data has today and use it to shape the data strategy of the future.

Data Ethics and Data Privacy

Government responses to COVID-19, such as citizen tracking, face recognition, health profiles and hot spot apps, has certainly pushed the edge of citizen privacy versus the public good debate.   What can CDOs learn from these responses to guide their company’s data ethics policies?  For example, what is the line between public good and privacy, who and how to make those decisions, what are the (unintended) future consequences of having this capability available, that data quality required to guard against false positives, transparency of algorithms, etc.

Experience Data, People & Communication

Staying connected can be challenging as we virtualize our organization.  Understanding better the challenges our employees, customers and vendors face is critical and can have a significant impact on your company. As a CDO, focusing on acquisition of experience data can contribute in helping your people and organization through these challenging times by better understanding their current needs and support by provided the required data that business teams can use to developing effective programs and communication to support them.
