Service mapping of SAP Business Technology Platform Neo and Cloud Foundry Environments

SAP Business technology Platform(BTP) offers two environments for application development – Neo and Cloud Foundry. One of the frequents question which I get from existing SAP BTP customers is around the considerations when moving their apps to Cloud Foundry environment. In this blog post, I have attempted to provide a mapping of SAP BTP services between the environment. For example, if you have built a Fiori app or mobile app leveraging services in Neo environment, you can scroll through the table to see the equivalent services required in Cloud Foundry. Please note that this blog is not a guide to help you migrate the apps/interfaces between these environments. You will have to refer to the respective documentations on migration path.

I have referenced the Service Catalog within the discovery center and SAP Business Technology Platform estimator to identify the services in the respective environments.

You can use the filters in the Service Catalog to quickly identify which services are available in the respective regions and DC providers

There are many business services specific to LoB solutions like Real Spend, SAP Customer Order Sourcing, SAP Omnichannel Promotion Pricing etc which I have not covered. There are also few services which do not run on standard SAP Cloud Platform regions for example Big Data service, SAP LiveLink, Rapid Application Development by Mendix etc which I’ve excluded from the list.

I will try to keep this upto date as possible. Feel free to comment on any additional services which I might have missed.

I have updated this blog post to also reflect the new names for the BTP services based on the recent rebranding of SAP Cloud Platform. If you would like to know more about the reason for rebranding, I would recommend you to go through this SAP Code Talk.

      Great summary, Murali!
Awesome to see this nicely structured.

I was scratching my head to think of something missing and the only one I could think of is Automation Pilot, nicely described by Kiril Gavrailov over here. It's also a good example of a service, which despite of being deployed on CF, can be used and allows automation both in the context of CF and Neo environments. In that sense - it's similar to Identity Authentication or Alert Notification services. Identity Provisioning is another interesting example, which although running on Neo (which is the least interesting part about it) is able to provision users across a large variety of systems, including Neo, CF, ABAP, Google G-Suite, Azure AD, etc. Therefore I'm a but puzzled to see that it's marked as not available on CF environment.

Having that in mind - probably it's a good idea to add a 3rd "Global" column, which denotes the services which are [consumable/deliver value] globally, irrespective of environment. I guess this will make your life easier when maintaining the list above, as the mantra for every service is to maximize its addressable market.

      Cheers,
      Krassi

      Hi Krasimir Semerdzhiev

Thanks for the feedback. I was sure I missed few things. I am surprised that "Automation Pilot" is not listed in the SAP Cloud Platform capabilities webpage.

I like your suggestion on adding a 3rd column. I will make an attempt in the next few days.

      Hi Guys,

Krasimir Semerdzhiev thanks for outlining this 🙂

Murali Shanmugham  - we are in the process of uploading ourselves to the capabilities page as we are in beta and working towards GA. However, if you have any questions don't hesitate to get in touch.

      Cheers,

      Hi everyone,

Can we use IOT service with Cloud Foundry trial account?

I can't see it in the Service Marketplace.

      Thanks.

      Hi Everyone,

I got a customer with a running XS application on Neo (live since 2 years now) without problems. It is using the old IOT service. Is there an urgent need for the customer to switch to CF? How long will the Neo environment be supported?

      Thanks,
      Frank

      Hi Frank,

      See https://blogs.sap.com/2020/07/27/sap-cloud-platform-moving-forward-on-our-multi-cloud-strategy/ by Steffen Schad.

There is no urgent need. There has been no end of maintenance announcement.

The Neo trial will end later this year and new customers will onboard the multi-cloud environment but for existing customers the Neo environment remains up and running.

      Hi Everyone,

why I can’t see more "Multichain" in the Service Marketplace.

It’s no longer available in trial account? Or maybe it is available only in some Country?

      Thanks,

      Majdi

      Hello Murali,

Great blog post. I landed here while searching for the official deprecation date of SAP Cloud Foundry - Neo. The side-by-side comparison is a good reference.

      Cheers
