This blog will cover S/4 HANA Data Migration Cockpit and SAP Data Services.
SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit
SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit is an easy-to-use, web-based application available within S/4 HANA.
The migration cockpit can be used out of the box and does not require programming skills, also provides guidance through the migration process. It comes with pre-configured content and mapping for each migration object, e.g. bank, material master. You can access the SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit by using transaction LTMC.
A successful MDG implementation not only involves the Initial load of governed objects such as customer/vendor master, but it also involves loading non-governed master data into MDG such as bank master so the bank details can be referenced in customer or vendor master data. Migration Cockpit is a handy tool to perform the initial data load for both governed and non-governed objects. This tool loads the data directly into the MDG active area.
This tool can be used in combination with traditional ETL tools such as SAP Data Services to perform the data load. In that case, DS does extract, transform and load the load-ready data into Migration Cockpit staging tables and then Cockpit takes care of the actual load.
At the time of this writing, the Migration cockpit in S/4 HANA 1909 does not offer any data quality functionality, but the road map looks quite promising. The improved version of Migration Cockpit will be a hard-to-leave-out tool in the future for data migration in general.

SAP Data Services (and Information Steward)
Shortly DS, it is the most preferred extract, transform and load (ETL) tool for data migration for many reasons, that includes
- Ability to connect with a variety of SAP and non-SAP systems with built-in, native connectors.
- Shows the impact of data quality issues across all downstream systems or applications.
- Ability to process high-volume of data
In MDG implementation projects, SAP DS can be used together with SAP Information Steward (IS) to migrate the clean data into the MDG system. IS facilitates data profiling and measures the data quality during the pre-data migration phase or on-going basis using the scorecards with data quality rules. With IS, data profiling results can be tapered down to a specific data set to better understand the business impacts of bad quality data.
SAP Rapid Data Migration(RDM) offers the pre-defined best-practice data migration content for Data Services and accelerates the process of cleansing, validating, transforming, and migrating the data from any system to MDG (on ECC or S/4 HANA).
While using SAP RDM for MDG related objects such as Business partners, Vendor master or Customer master, keep an eye on (un)supported fields in the MDG data model and handle them accordingly. Refer to SAP Note 2221398 for (un)supported fields in MDG.
DS and IS not only help MDG data migration but also assist in MDG integration scenarios such as Data Quality Remediations (DQR) and Data Quality Management (DQM)
Part 4 explores how next-generation HANA powered tools such as Smart Data Integrator (SDI), Smart Data Quality (SDQ) and SAP Agile Data Preparation (ADP) help in MDG on S/4 HANA data migration.
Part 5 explains MDG consolidation data import and traditional data loads methods using back-end functions
