Regulations influencing the sale and distribution of products have increased sharply worldwide. The only way to efficiently cover these requirements is to embed them in the product lifecycle – from product development to sales and distribution operations.

Product Compliance is a functionality that has been completely re-engineered in SAP S/4HANA, taking full advantage of the new technical capabilities: from intuitive FIORI apps to a simplified and performance-friendly new data model. At the same time, preserving the virtues of the classic solution: a single source of truth for regulatory data, built-in regulatory content, full integration into all relevant processes.

Central element of the new data model is the compliance requirement. It represents a regulation or part of it, company- or industry-specific lists, norms, or any other requirement playing a role. These detailed elements are clustered into compliance purposes, which usually represent a set of regulations for a given region, purpose, and product (group).

These compliance purposes are then assigned to a packaged or unpackaged product. While SAP delivers both compliance requirements and -purposes as built-in regulatory content, customers can easily create their own - structured according to their needs.

The Product Steward’s work is automated by the regulatory content, which is now included in the software license, and an increasing number of tools and functions, e.g. for the release of compliance purposes.

With SAP S/4HANA 1909, these logistics checks are available:

- can I sell / produce the product

- can I transport the product (Dangerous Goods)

- is a Safety Data Sheet available for the right country, in the right language.

On a negative result, the first two checks will by default block a sales order. The SDS check will only issue a warning, as this document usually is sent digitally and independently of the physical shipment.

The Dangerous Goods check utilizes the DG-related compliance purposes and is visualized in the intuitive Compliance Overview for Products-app, which so far merely showed the results for marketability (sell / produce):

As of release 1909, Safety Data Sheets can be uploaded into the system, with the corresponding tagging for country and language. The functionality to create SDSs will follow in a later release. For details please refer to http://sap.com/roadmaps.

Good news for ECC customers using the classic EHS Product Safety functionality: it is included in the “SAP S/4HANA for Product Compliance” license. SAP thus ensures a smooth transition to S/4HANA, especially for customers who may have extended their EHS-Product Safety solution heavily. SAP also ensures investment protection because, as of today, the classic EHS-Product Safety license will be fully credited when the S/4HANA Product Compliance license is acquired.

The functionality shown is only one of the manifold innovations enabled by SAP S/4HANA. To find out more, stay tuned for our upcoming videos and blogs and feel free to have a look here:
