SAP TechEd 2019: Innovating with SAP Partners for the Intelligent Enterprise – Event Highlights
The SAP Partner Innovation Lifecycle Services team held a special interest activity, Innovating with SAP Partners for the Intelligent Enterprise on Monday September 23rd running-up to TechEd, SAP’s preeminent technology conference which recently took place in Las Vegas.
Here are the highlights:
The event attracted a number of SAP Partners with diverse specialties from those offering software solutions and integrations to those providing hosting services or appliances. It provided the opportunity to hear about SAP’s Next-Gen partnering strategy and learn how the SAP Partner Innovation Lifecycle Services team supports the SAP Partner Ecosystem through its wide-ranging portfolio of services specifically designed to help partners better support customers and enable them to become Intelligent Enterprises. Furthermore, it was an occasion to hear directly from SAP Partners such as EY and Vertex about their certification and co-innovation experiences and the lessons learned for success. The more technically focused sessions were about how to support S/4HANA customer upgrades and the opportunities for SAP Partners with the SAP Cloud Platform ABAP Environment.

bridging the gap between mindfulness and building better software devops
Nice blog David, Looks like Partners need to Certify their Addons for every release of S4HANA . And then when the release version S4HANA 1909 comes they have to refactor their code on Netweaver Addons to new ABAP Restful Programming model which can be a lot of work for Partners , kindly comment on the effort required for Partner addons for new RAP model in SAP Cloud platform ABAP environment and as well as S4HANA 1909 as Netweaver support ends in 2025 and we would have new ABAP stack (with no Netweaver AS server). Sorry i went too technical but i am confused here on the effort and refactoring of code .sample code in this blog https://blogs.sap.com/2019/05/23/sap-cloud-platform-abap-restful-programming-model-rap-for-beginners/
As you can see ABAP Programming model for SAP Fiori and RESTful ABAP Programming model are both different , in second case there is no Netweaver stack what happens to Partner addon code in that case i am assuming it has to be recoded ?Please comment.
Hi Pradeep, Thank you. At the event, we had the opportunity to hear from Florian Wahl from the product mgmt team who delivered a great presentation on the subject and as he explained, innovation brings opportunities for SAP Partners with the SAP Cloud Platform ABAP Environment. Unfortunately, we don’t have a recording but I hear there will be a webinar and so stay tuned. In the meantime, please find some answers to your questions about ABAP environment from experts in this previously delivered Q&A , see also roadmap for partner delivery model. SAP is putting in place considerable efforts to ensure a smooth transition as best as possible and offer reuse when feasible of “legacy” code as explained here. As announced by Florian, in release 1908 the custom code migration app can be used for code transformation projects targeting the ABAP environment which can prove very helpful.
Ok Thank you David , I have gone through Florian Wahldemo sessions earlier on ABAP Cloud platform and also aware of Custom code migration app .
Here is what Karl Kesslers :Vice President of Product Management ABAP Platform blog says "Going forward, new ABAP development features will be delivered to the ABAP platform that is delivered with SAP S/4HANA, not through SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP, which will receive updates to support the operation of SAP Business Suite, but not new ABAP innovations. This is an important consideration as you evaluate if and when to move to SAP S/4HANA and is a compelling argument to get serious about SAP S/4HANA".

If you look deeper entire custom code has to be refactored as per new ABAP platform , i am waiting for a response from Karl Kessler . Can you please direct this to him and provide me an update .
There is a CAA 101 session in SAP Teched 2019 and here is what it has to say "When it comes to transformation of custom code it is not just one to one copy of code like onpremise , it requires great deal of effort .Decouple custom code from Application code There is no application layer /stack only technology stack would be there .If you have a Netweaver Addon custom code which has lot of sql statements to financial tables /logistic tables it is much harder to decouple . SAP recommends to follow/ADOPT new RESTFUL Programming model and Eliminate use of not supported functionality ".
As i understand this brings more effort for partners and more work/jobs for ABAP developers 🙂 .
Best regards,
Pradeep Akula.
