SAP Master Data Governance (SAP MDG) on SAP S/4HANA provides preconfigured, domain-specific master data governance to monitor and remediate data quality issues, to centrally create, change, and distribute, or to consolidate master data across your complete enterprise system landscape. With these capabilities, it is perfectly suited for enterprise master data management across application landscapes deployed on premise or in the cloud. (To get a quick update on the innovations that have come with SAP S/4HANA 1909 release, see this delta presentation).
In cloud-centric landscapes, applications must be able to consume master data flexibly and in a harmonized way based on cross-system consistency. In a nutshell, master data management and master data integration are key drivers for flawless business processes in cloud contexts.

Master data management for the cloud

Today, many companies and organizations see and cherish master data as a valuable enterprise asset. They understand that high-quality master data is the driving force behind trustworthy and reliable analytics and flawless, effective business transactions. To protect this core asset as a value driver they are inclined to keep it private and at home while exposing specific business applications in the public cloud. Accordingly, SAP Master Data Governance on SAP S/4HANA deployed on premise, in the private-cloud or in the cloud as a single tenant, can serve as the single source of truth for cloud applications.

Fig.1: In this real-life scenario, the master data creation process starts in a cloud system. The decentral process triggers a governance process in SAP MDG on SAP S/4HANA. After finalization of the process in SAP MDG with the final approval, the enriched high-quality master data is activated and replicated to all relevant cloud and on-premise systems.

Such integration scenarios can be implemented based on standard capabilities, for example using extendable SOA services. Any system can be involved as source and/or target. There is pre-built integration for selected SAP systems. like for instance SAP Cloud for Customer.

Master data management in the cloud

As outlined above, SAP MDG helps companies on their cloud journey by providing consistent master data. It extends MDM processes into business networks such as Ariba or SAP Asset Intelligence Network (AIN) by providing the trusted master data layer for cross-company information exchange. In addition, SAP MDG integrates with cloud-based microservices for streamlined data enrichment and data sharing. For example, it integrates with the data enrichment service based on SAP Cloud Platform. This helps in getting master data consistent by including expert information from third party data providers. In addition, we have started to offer SAP Cloud Platform-based microservices as an alternative way to synchronize between SAP MDG and any public cloud application (SOAP & ODATA).

Fig. 2: Master data services on SAP Cloud Platform are geared towards harmonized sharing of master data in the cloud and streamlined consumption by cloud and on-premise applications while the task of keeping master data clean on enterprise level is with SAP Master Data Governance on SAP S/4HANA.

Today, SAP Cloud Platform Master Data for business partners, integrated with SAP S/4HANA and SAP C/4HANA is is already available.

More services and continued hub-and-spoke integration are planned to support our customers on their cloud journey. We make sure that consistent master data is available and easy-to-consume in cloud-centric landscapes.

Best,

Markus
