With SAP S/4HANA 1909 and the SAP Fiori front-end server 6.0, we take on-premise customers on the first step of the SAP Fiori 3 journey, which evolves the award-winning SAP Fiori design for all SAP products to fully support the Intelligent Suite, running on any device.
With SAP S/4HANA 1909, the very first step of the SAP Fiori 3 journey becomes available to end users for on-premise customers: the new Quartz theme as a successor of the Belize theme used with SAP Fiori 2.0, and the new shell header bar with unified capabilities.
Customers with older releases of SAP S/4HANA or SAP Business Suite can also get this by upgrading their SAP Fiori front-end server to release 6.0.
We already released this to customers with SAP S/4HANA Cloud 1908; with SAP S/4HANA 1909, the same user experience now becomes available on premise. Have a look at this short video to get a brief overview of SAP Fiori 3 and to see this first step in action with SAP S/4HANA:
One of the central motivations of SAP Fiori 3 was the development of a design that could be adopted across all products at SAP leading to a more consistent and integrated experience across the entire portfolio – so as to provide a consistent user experience across the various SAP products that an end user needs to work with.
This first step brings the new Quartz theme, which is lighter and more neutral, to blend more into the background, giving application content the center stage, as well as the new shell header bar, which has been aligned to be a best fit for all SAP products, and to be as simple as possible.
These are planned to be adopted by further products going forward, thus helping to achieve a consistent user experience. But this is just the beginning – the target design for SAP Fiori 3 has a lot more in the pipeline, such as:

With SAP S/4HANA 1909, the new Quartz theme and the new shell header bar is available for classic UIs running in the browser, so all users can profit from SAP Fiori 3.
Furthermore, with SAP S/4HANA 1909, classic UIs have been touch enabled, so that they can be used on tablets; find out more in this blog. A selection of the SAP S/4HANA 1909 classic UIs have been released for use on tablets, you can find out which ones via the SAP Fiori apps reference library by selecting “Tablet” in the filter “Form Factor”, and selecting “SAP GUI” , “Web Dynpro” and “Web Client UI” in the filter “UI Technology”. It is technically possible for customers to enable the use of non-released UIs on tablets, but SAP only provides support for tablet-related issues for released UIs.
In case you were not already aware of this: you can easily simplify classic UIs by using SAP Screen Personas to e.g. hide fields, merge tabs etc.
For SAP S/4HANA on-premise customers, the new Quartz theme and shell header bar are currently planned to become available for SAP GUI for Windows running in the SAP Business Client in the second half of next year. Until then you can continue using the Belize theme, or your own custom theme: these are supported with the new SAP Fiori 3 shell header bar.
The good news for developers of SAP Fiori apps is that the SAP Fiori 3 theme Quartz is compatible with the SAP Fiori 2.0 theme Belize: as long as you have built SAP Fiori apps using SAP Fiori elements, SAPUI5 or OpenUI5, without adding your own CSS (cascading style sheets) and without developing your own SAPUI5 controls, your app will work fine with SAP Fiori 3 without any technical adoption effort. If you have built your own controls, or you have your own CSS (which we advise against), you will need to check whether they still look OK with the new Quartz theme. If you do have your own controls or CSS, do also check your apps for mobile devices, since we have made the metric for the cozy mode slightly more compact, so that for example more lines in a table can be shown on the screen.
Further good news for developers using SAP Fiori elements: the updated action placement in apps, so that action buttons are positioned more intuitively, is provided out of the box for developers by SAP Fiori elements.
Should you have created your own custom theme, then don’t worry: it will continue to work without you needing to make any adjustments.
