In 2010, SAP introduced SAP HANA to the market as the first data platform to deliver real-time analytics on live transactions. SAP HANA continues to provide our now more than 28,000 customers with the speed and simplicity they need to harness the value of their data assets.

  • A look at the latest enhancements to SAP HANA in the cloud and on premise

It’s an innovation journey that has fueled SAP HANA’s market leadership in democratizing in-memory computing and empowering everyone with data. Today marks another important milestone along that path as we announce the latest SAP HANA innovations.

Over the years, we have broadened the applicability of SAP HANA to a variety of use cases across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. Not only does SAP HANA run at the heart of our business applications, such as SAP S/4HANA and SAP SuccessFactors, it also supports a broad range of data types so that our customers can analyze all their data assets – structured and unstructured – in context, as well as enabling the creation of intelligent applications and extensions that make predictions and embed real-time machine learning into business processes. SAP HANA has always worked synergistically with our innovative analytics solution, SAP Analytics Cloud, which helps customers make end-to-end decisions with confidence.

Businesses recognize the impact of data on value creation and competition in the digital economy. They know that to truly transform into an intelligent enterprise, a modern, outcome-based data strategy is essential. A recent IDC study  of our own customers on the value they derive from SAP HANA projected an impressive five-year return on investment (ROI) of 679 percent.* The market response to the enhancements in SAP HANA has been truly phenomenal, with our customer base growing by 44 percent over the previous year in 2018.

And the innovation continues! We are bringing to life new innovations that allow our customers to manage more data in real time and at lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

In bringing these latest capabilities to market, we’ve been focusing on three main areas.

1. Intelligence

Not only does SAP HANA have new capabilities to help IT accelerate operations and data science life cycles – including managing the life cycle of TensorFlow models directly in SAP HANA and using R scripts in streaming analytics algorithms – but it can also process hybrid transactional analytical workloads on multimodel data in one system without tuning. And now with the new recommendations application in SAP HANA cockpit, system and database administrators can easily optimize the performance of large-scale deployments and accelerate and simplify IT operations.

2. Agility

SAP HANA allows our customers to run their applications across multiple clouds, on hybrid landscapes, and on premise, enabling them to innovate faster on the best infrastructure for the job at hand. For example, it is now possible to model geospatial data faster with new cloud-based modeling tools as well as to use optimized techniques such as in-database Hexagonal clustering – an industry first – to analyze earth observation data and identify emergency evacuation routes or optimal placement for utility pipelines.

On the infrastructure side, with new support for hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) solutions from our hardware partners certified for SAP HANA, customers can also bring a cloud-like experience to their on-premise data centers, leveraging software managed allocation of virtual compute, storage, and network resources — independently of their locations. And thanks to further enhanced capabilities in our data anonymization functionality, such as support for additional anonymization methods and simplified auditability and governance, enterprises get best-in-class support to work with, share, or monetize their data while preserving data privacy in compliance with regulations.

3. Efficiency

recent IDC survey¹ found that it is 42 percent faster to deliver solutions with SAP HANA than with other traditional or special-purpose databases. In addition to simplifying IT landscapes, the all-in-one SAP HANA architecture has enabled our customers to increase productivity by a multiple of five. We are also very proud to be the first major database optimized for Intel Optane DC persistent memory, enabling our customers to leverage an innovative new type memory that is non-volatile and delivers higher data capacity at a lower TCO. Plus, new data tiering options allow our customers to support larger data set cost-efficiently and with optimal utilization of system resources, further lowering the overall TCO of SAP HANA installations.

SAP HANA is the very heart of SAP, and these innovations are enabling customers to turn data into lasting value for their businesses. With SAP HANA, companies have a single data management platform to process information coming from all channels to drive continuous innovation, predict business outcomes, and uncover new business opportunities – empowering everyone with data by democratizing in-memory computing.
