The Forgotten Candidate (who is right in front of you)

The forgotten candidate

Finding the best talent has generally been an external conversation – one focused on the mindset of “The best has to be out there.”

Many companies promote the ideology of promoting and hiring from within, but this is greatly overstated when you look at reality. Very little focus has been set on the internal candidate. Don’t believe me? Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • What does your internal candidate experience look like?
  • How do you communicate vacancies?
  • How do you brand yourself to internal employees?
  • Do you have a nurture strategy for employees who have been in the company for a specific period of time?
  • What does your internal career site look like?
  • How does the application process leverage what you already know about the employee?

If you answered, “I don’t know,” or you didn’t have a comprehensive answer, it means your emphasis has been focused on “The best has to be out here” philosophy.

Now is the time to change this. With the beginnings of a global economic slowdown coming ashore, we need to retain the best employees, those with institutional knowledge, an affinity for change and adaptability, and high productivity. One key method of retention is giving employees new opportunities and treating them with care. Too often we take advantage of internal candidates and it shows in turnover rates.

This is why, in our latest SAP SuccessFactors quarterly release, we are launching a completely new approach to internal hiring with an internal career site powered by Career Site Builder. Now, internal candidates have the exact same experience as external candidates – and, here is the kicker, it can all be done with minimal maintenance. That means customers manage one career site (internal and external), and an intelligent authentication process displays the right content and the right jobs for the candidate.

A simple, elegant approach to upping your internal candidate experience. And, when coupled with candidate relationship management processes, you can nurture internal candidates in the same way as externals.

If you haven’t taken a look at your internal candidate experience, I implore you to evaluate and start building out your new internal career site.
