Monday Knowledge Snippet (MKS) – 80 Detailed Package Building – Product Orientation

To enable the Supply Chain Execution Package Builder (SCE PB) to create detailed load plans for each mixed pallet, it is required to consider how products can be turned or tilted.

So far it was only possible in the product master data to define product dimensions, but not the allowed rotations.

Now it is possible to add under the tab ‘Pkg Data’ a Orientation Profile:

To reduce maintenance effort and save the definition per product, it is possible to define a default orientation profile in the Package Building Profile:

Another option is to define this setting for a reference product for package building, that is assigned to the product.

My best-practice would be to:

  • define the Default Product Orientation Profile in the Package Building Profile with the settings covering the majority of the products / scenarios
  • define exemptions on the highest possible reference material

Example: Company producing beverages packaged into CAN, PET, and GLAS

  • most products can not be tilted when being put onto a mixed pallet -> Define a no tilting Orientation profile in the Package Building Profile as default
  • only PET products can be tilted -> Define a tilting Orientation Profile for the top level PET reference product

Logic for the determination is the following:

  1. Profile defined on product
  2. Profile defined on lowest level of reference material for package building
  3. Default profile
  4. Hard coded default (no tilt)

The definition of the Product Orientation Profile can be done in transaction /SCMB/MAT_ORIENT, available also in the customizing under the product definitions.

The profile itself is I think one of the first customizing activities that includes graphical elements to explain the settings. Internally there have been plenty of rounds to come up with reasonable wording, but in the end pictures explain it better:

So after having this defined, the result of detailed package building will reflect it.

Simple example:

5 pieces of the same product, tilt allowed creates a single pallet:

No tilt allowed forces a second pallet:

  

 

As you can see from the definition, the feature supports 6 settings. It is not possible to differentiate 2 opposite sides. For example the front of a fridge versus its back. From a load planning perspective the PB ensures that it can fit physically, but is limited in regards of restricting the rotation even further. This could be finalized in a custom project.
