During new project implementations, it is required to decide on the number of register groups to be created. The choice of the number of register groups is guided by the existing portfolio of the meters and the future portfolio. This would normally result in a large number of register groups. If we would have large number of register groups then it would also result in a complex logic to choose the register group for a device.
An approach is suggested here to determine the number of register groups required. Let us consider the case of Electricity Utilities where there is a wide variety of parameters to be measured. As a first step, it is required to know the maximum number of registers available per device in the existing portfolio. Taking into account the future portfolio, we can decide on the maximum number of registers that would possibly be available in any of the devices. That could be the number of registers in the register group to be created. For example, if 7 is the maximum number of registers that is envisaged, then 2 register groups may be created with 7 register each. One register group would be for discrete meters and the other register group will be for interval meters.
Only the mandatory field needs to be filled up. In case of interval meters, the interval field is to be filled up. Please note that the check box “Propose register during installation/replacement” is selected only for the register 1. During device installation or with device modification, the required number of registers can be enabled depending on the device. The other fields and other non-mandatory fields can be modified / entered during the device installation / modification depending on the actual device parameters.
It may be noted that a separate register group was required for the interval meters because of the interval characteristics such as interval permissible rate types.
