This week I will join 50,000+ developers at the 2018’s AWS re:Invent conference. The goal is to learn more about the latest and greatest AWS services. Also to share all the ways customers can expedite their SAP HANA deployment and innovate faster on AWS.

There are a number of “roads to SAP HANA” on AWS…

  • SAP’s managed service, SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA service can be deployed to run natively in AWS—with just a contract from SAP.

  • Run SAP HANA, express edition in AWS—the software licensing is free (even for productive workloads).

  • SAP HANA can run on AWS in a BYOL license model, so you can take your perpetual license and apply it to your cloud infrastructure versus on premises

  • If you are an SAP application customer using a non-HANA database, the AWS Fast Program is an excellent way to adopt SAP HANA on AWS. It includes services and migration utilities to ensure you are successful.

Running SAP HANA on AWS brings faster time to value, elastic scale, the ability to just pay for what you use, and guaranteed SLAs—which is pretty awesome! But what is really exciting is seeing how customers combine the services on AWS with those in the SAP Cloud Platform (including the SAP HANA service).

For example, here is a great blog on running federated queries for AWS data lakes with SAP HANA. Here is a tutorial on the same.

Developers can also build custom applications on SAP HANA and enhance them with AWS services like SageMaker or Polly as displayed below.

Will you be at AWS re:Invent? There are a number of valuable sessions (search “HANA”).  Also I’d like to specifically call out the sessions SAP HANA as a Service – embracing a cloud native mindset Nov 29 at 1:40pm and - Don’t be left behind, join the migration to SAP HANA Nov 27 at 1:10pm.

If you are not at re:Invent but want to innovate on SAP HANA and AWS, consider pre-registering your interest in our joint App Challenge. This is a time bound contest for building an application using SAP HANA and AWS services (with the support of SAP). There will be goodies for entering and prizes for the winners!
