BOBJ & HANA for Basis (1) …

…or when the basis guy plays around with BO and HANA!

Needed some challenge!

This blog series is about my experience playing around with BOBJ and HANA.

My background was mainly “old fashioned SAP flavored” applications. I mean, I started working on SAP systems back in 1999, when everything was all about ABAP application server, and Oracle was the main DB for high-end deployments… No Java … No Hybris… No Hana… No BOBJ … No …whatever… So, I was far from having the required knowledge.

Now, why I am talking about this?  Because I needed some training/learning material in order to level these skills up! Like most of us when it comes to learning some new “tricks”.

Then what’s available?

I guess we all know about the traditional training available at SAP: training.sap.com .

But, as I could not get money to be spent on training for this “technological watch” project, I’d need some training for “free”.

Here, what I mostly used was scn.sap.com. I won’t say again, and again, and again, how this community site is great to get knowledge from people who know.  Lots of blogs are there from top experts. Lots of information also in the Q&As etc…

Another one was open.sap.com: maybe a little less known, this is the source for Massive Open Online Courses ( SAP related… but not only ). And there I was lucky enough to enroll in some BOBJ platform courses! Awesome !

Last thing required: Time.

An extra one, if you’re lucky enough: training platform(s).

“You see, there is only one constant, one universal, it is the only real truth: causality. Action. Reaction. Cause and effect.”

The Merovingian / Matrix Reloaded. 😉

Well, all this to say: what will this be all about? What’s the purpose?

In short, it will be about providing a solution that will produce rather visual reports around the IT landscape we’re using.

I often have to provide numbers and figures whether for internal purposes or for customers, so I can be better understood and we can show much easier what’s going on the platforms.

Also, I used to be tasked with providing monthly reports/capacity planning and, as with any redundant task, well… I really don’t like that! Especially when I feel like that shiny software/hardware platform can do the job for me!

Here are some samples of what I was able to produce in the end :

  • Tables review :

  • Hana memory reviews :

  • Health/availability scorecards :

Also Disk /CPU etc… reports, in a word or two, capacity planning,  all built up automatically and highly customisable.

So stay tuned! See you very soon!
