SAP HANA Cockpit 2.0 SP 08 What’s New – by the SAP HANA Academy

Introduction

In the upcoming days and weeks, we will be posting new videos to the SAP HANA Academy to show new features and functionality introduced with SAP HANA cockpit 2.0 SP 08, released October 2018.

Installation and Update

No changes: the installation and update process for SP08 is the same as for the previous release(s).

Navigation Enhancements

Several enhancements have been made to make it easier to work your way around in Cockpit:

  • Lateral navigation
  • Recent Activity and Frequently Used in the Me area
  • Navigate directly to a targeted resource from Cockpit Manager to Cockpit

Password Reset

Change password for Cockpit users is now self-service through Me area > Settings. Previously only a cockpit user administrator could change passwords.

For the documentation, see

Global Collection Settings Override

For APCA (availability, performance, capacity, and alerts) collections, use the Cockpit Manager to manage global settings, or edit a registered resource and override the global settings for that particular resource.

For the documentation, see

Workload Management

Configure a query timeout and/or choose between relative or absolute values for the statement thread and statement memory limit, and when importing workload classes, a message dialog keeps you informed on the number that have imported, skipped or overwritten.

For the documentation, see

SAP HANA Database Explorer

Tutorial Video

Autosave

The content of the SQL console is saved 30 seconds after your last keystroke, when you use the Run menu, your console is connected to a database, or when you close your console or browser. All saved SQL consoles are re-opened with their content (but not result sets) when you next open database explorer.

Report Code Coverage

The Analyze menu of the SQL console now includes the Report Code Coverage option, which gathers position (line, column, start, end) coverage information for SQLScript procedures, functions, and anonymous blocks.

The Hide/Show Columns icon on the toolbar allows you to specify which type of data to download: hidden columns, filtered rows, or both.

For the documentation, see

User Management and Security Administration

Tutorial Video

Auditing

XS Advanced auditing logs are included in the audit table viewer and step-by-step guidance (“wizard”) has been added for creating audit policies.

For the documentation, see

User Management

Last log on time and deactivated since are displayed in User Management.

JWT identify provider management (create, update, delete) is now available as an app. Previously, only the SQL interface was provided.

Navigation between role assignment and role definition has been simplified.

For HDI roles, you can choose between the HDI Container API procedure (requires EXECUTE on the GRANT_CONTAINER_SCHEMA_ROLES procedure in the container’s API schema) or using SQL (role admin).

For the documentation, see

Encryption

The encryption algorithm used in now displayed in the app.

Backup and Recovery

Scheduling Backup

Schedule tenant backups from the system database (system-wide backups):

Capture and Replay

On the Capture Configuration page, turn on the Abstract SQL Plan to capture abstract SQL plans on the source system and to export them to the file system, or turn on the SQL Input Parameters option to see the parameter values in the replay report.

From the Replay Management page:

  • Open the Replay List tab to see the status of the started replays with more information under Details
  • Stop a started replay using the Stop button in the Replay Status column.
  • Start the preprocess from the Preprocess Status column in the Replay Candidate tab.

On the Replay Report:

  • Filter the slower statements by elapsed time, CPU time, and execution time using the drop-down button in the Slower Statement section.
  • Sort the displayed statements by clicking directly the column header.

For the documentation, see

Performance Monitoring

Monitor Statements consolidates Statement Monitor, SQL Plan Cache, and Expensive Trace Monitor from previous releases into a single view.

Configure the SQL plan cache size or clear all plan cache.

Save SQL plans within the SAP HANA database as PLV files under SAP HANA trace folder, and download the files to your hard drive.

Choose from predefined KPI preset views and define custom views on the Performance Monitor page.

Perform remote imports of nameserver history trace.

For the documentation, see

SQL Analyzer

View details on the query compilation process in the Compilation Summary section of the SQL Analyzer with Recommendations on how to improve the SQL performance provided.

Delete PLV files from the SAP HANA trace folder on the Manage Saved Plans page; update the  location for abstract SQL plans; migrate abstract SQL plans to the latest SAP HANA database release:

For the documentation, see

Workload Analyzer

To access Workload Analyzer, select the CPU Usage, Disk Usage, Memory Usage, or SQL Statements tiles from Overview or through the Capture Management page for analysis of captured workloads as the dedicated tile has been removed from the Overview page.

For the documentation, see

Memory Analysis

Filter the display of tables using Chart Value, Show Top, Filter by Schema(s), and Time Range filter options.

For the documentation, see

Administration and Monitoring (Other)

Access to SAP HANA Add-On Capabilities

New tiles for SAP HANA options on the System Overview page (Accelerator for ASE, Dynamic Tiering, Remote Data Sync, Smart Data Access, and Streaming Analytics).

Table Distribution and Table Placement Editor

Specify rules for where new tables/partitions are placed or where tables/partitions are moved during a redistribution with the table placement editor.

Additionally, several enhancements have been made to table distribution. For the documentation, see

Log Viewing

Find and read entries in the cockpit’s operational logs and view the logs to troubleshoot problems like missing monitoring data on cockpit pages, resource registration failure, and connection timeouts.

For the documentation, see

      Hi Denys,

Thanks for the comprehensive blogs/videos/tutorials on HANA cockpit. One thing I cannot find however. Would like to setup recurring backups of HANA cockpit itself. For other HANA native systems we use the XS scheduling options.

As HANA cockpit does not have XS scheduler, what is the preferred way to backup HANA cockpit? Would like to not use OS scripts for this. Could you please point me into the correct direction?

      Thx!

      Sander.

      Hello Sander,

actually you can also schedule backups for the cockpit database itself, using the cockpit.

You need to add the cockpit database as a resource to the cockpit (using the cockpit manager).

Afterwards, you need to activate the xs engine and the xs job scheduler, as they are not activated by default for a HXE database:

      Starting the xsengine:

      https://help.sap.com/viewer/6b94445c94ae495c83a19646e7c3fd56/2.0.03/en-US/e8b56a8a904a4a9d9bfa7fa76aec5674.html

      Enabling the xs job scheduler:

      https://help.sap.com/viewer/6b94445c94ae495c83a19646e7c3fd56/2.0.03/en-US/5ca042ca971f4fddbc1d4a961f7c22ed.html

Afterwards you can use the scheduling functionality in the backup app and schedule backups for the cockpit.

      Best regards,

      Melanie

      Hello,

in my HANA Cockpit 2.6.8 I have a HANA 1.0 SPS12 (1.00.122.21.1540267292) with three databases.

The SYSTEMDB and HT1 and HT2. In the section "Manage Database" I can Stop/Start the Tenant when I press the button "Stop Tenant" or "Start Tenant".

After the update to Cockpit Version 2.8.8 I can see the buttons, but I can only start an already stopped tenant database.
Stopping tenant database is no longer possible.

Any idea where I can see what's not working anymore?

      Regards

      Morten

      Hi Morten,

I understand you observe a (not documented) change in functionality from using the latest cockpit version for SPS 12 systems. My environment does not contain a SPS 12 system, so I cannot reproduce the issue. For SPS03, tenant database management works fine.

In more general terms, for specific issues related to your customer environment it is probably best to contact SAP Support.

If this is not an option, could you share a print screen?
