The SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory will become an integral part of SAP Cloud Platform. In my initial blog post I gave a general introduction. As questions might come up I’ve created this FAQ blog post to address those.

What is SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory and what is project “Kyma”?
SAP Cloud Platform will be delivering a cloud-native extensibility framework to make it easier for customers and partners to personalize and extend their existing SAP applications. SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory provides new capabilities with enterprise-grade qualities and support and is currently planned for general availability in H1 2019.
The biggest benefit of this approach is no longer having to add custom code to those enterprise applications, as custom code typically introduces performance and upgrade risks.
Kyma is an open source project for cloud-native extensibility of solutions but not meant to be used for creating and managing enterprise applications. It can be used to prototype new ideas and validate them with the community.
SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory leverages concepts and innovations from Kyma, and Kyma is influenced by the needs of SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory.
If I can use project “Kyma” to build extensions off my Commerce, Sales Cloud, etc., why do I need SAP Cloud Platform?
SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory provides enterprise support and enterprise-grade qualities. With SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory, you can leverage the 65+ capabilities of SAP Cloud Platform such as security, SAP HANA-as-a-Service, IoT, Integration, etc. allowing you to focus on the business logic and user experience. In contrast to Kyma, you don’t have to install, setup, run and operate a Kubernetes system, and can rely on SLAs for the complete offering, including the integration.
I thought SAP Cloud Platform is the extension platform for SAP C/4HANA, how is SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory different or new?
The SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory will provide additional capabilities to ensure a seamless connectivity between applications or complete solutions to your accounts on SAP Cloud Platform. The extensions built for SAP C/4HANA can be developed as an application or by leveraging Function-as-a-Service.
Does SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory include integration capabilities?
With the Function-as-a-Service capability (Beta) you can create functions that support you in creating event-based extensions to enable light-weight integrations. For more complex enterprise scenarios, the SAP Cloud Platform Integration is the recommended approach

How can I buy SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory?
SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory is a layer, combining a set of SAP Cloud Platform services that extend and ease the pain of connecting applications to the SAP Cloud Platform. The Extension Factory will be an integral part of SAP Cloud Platform and will not be commercialized as a separate product.
When will SAP CP Extension Factory be available to customers?
The general availability of SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory is currently planned in H1/2019.
Are there any customers using this already?
There are several customers going through a program with a restricted lab preview of SAP CP Extension Factory right now. A wider round lab-preview will be announced at SAP CX Live event in Barcelona (10-11 Oct) for customers of SAP Commerce Cloud running on Microsoft Azure. More will be shared as we get closer to a general availability.
Will SAP CP Extension Factory be running on Azure or SAP CP?
The SAP CP Extension Factory is an integral part of the SAP Cloud Platform and therefore, will be available in all data centers where SAP CP is running.
