ABAP Platform for SAP S/4HANA 1809

SAP S/4HANA 1809 was released on 21st  of September to the SAP customer base.

ABAP platform 1809 is the technology platform underlying SAP S/4HANA 1809 and shipped as part of SAP S/4HANA 1809. In addition, ABAP platform 1809 represents the foundation for SAP HANA-only add-ons, e.g. SAP Marketing and SAP Access Control.

In contrast to SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP, ABAP platform 1809 is not shipped as a standalone product. ABAP platform 1809 consists of the AS ABAP, ADT for Eclipse and several additional technology components which are required to run SAP S/4HANA.

Previous SAP S/4HANA on-premise versions such as 1511, 1610 and 1709 can be upgraded to SAP S/4HANA 1809.

ABAP platform 1809 further exploits the underlying SAP HANA capabilities such as hierarchy in ABAP Core Data Services (CDS) and various enhancements in ABAP Managed Database Procedures and Functions (AMDP). Open SQL was expanded in scope and renamed to ABAP SQL to reflect the stronger focus on leveraging native SAP HANA features. The ABAP programming model for SAP Fiori was further optimized as it is crucial for the development of modern, SAP HANA-optimized analytical, transactional and search applications in SAP S/4HANA.  The ABAP programming model is based on state-of-the-art and proven technologies of the ABAP platform such as CDS, Business Object Processing Framework (BOPF), OData and SAPUI5.

ABAP development tools for Eclipse in ABAP platform 1809 further increase developer efficiency through support for customer modifications and enhancements, runtime error analysis and extensions in ABAP Unit. It is now possible to assign ABAP Unit tests to ABAP repository objects which cannot have their own tests, such as CDS views and Simple Transformations.

Additional enrichment in the Industrial IoT area is enabling of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication by MQTT support in ABAP platform 1809.

ABAP platform 1809 comprises various improvements in code analysis tools like first automatic code adaptations to minimize effort for our customers to adapt custom code after system conversion to SAP S/4HANA. The new SAP Fiori Custom Code Migration App optimizes the process by reducing custom code amount for migration based on usage data and providing analytical representation of required custom code adjustments.

The SAP S/4HANA extensibility, i.e. the in-app extensibility and the side-by-side extensibility using SAP Cloud Platform, was further optimized in the ABAP platform 1809.

This document will be regularly updated. Stay tuned to be informed about the latest ABAP platform 1809 news.

      Hi Kiran,

please take a look at the Overview Presentation linked in the blog and all documents under "Expert Content" in the ABAP Development Community.

Core ABAP technologies for SAP S/4HANA development are "ABAP for SAP HANA" like CDS, AMDPs,  ABAP Programming Model. The recommended development environment is ABAP Development Tools in Eclipse.

      Best regards,

      Olga.
