#BW4HANA #ASUG Webcast Recap

At ASUG Annual Conference, SAP presented a sneak preview of Project Blueberry, aka BW/4HANA as a SaaS offering.  Link to slides from ASUG Annual Conference is here.

BW/4HANA software as a service, called Project Blueberry.  This is covered later in the ASUG webcast.  For a replay of the webcast, please see register here.  Special thanks to SAP’s Ulrich Christ for this webcast and ASUG volunteer Shawn Cooper for moderating.

The typical SAP legal disclaimer applies that anything in the future is subject to change.

BW/4HANA is a separate product

Not part of NetWeaver

Only runs on HANA

Eclipse based modeling tools

Open to full suite of BI clients

Source: SAP

Development around 4 topics

Simplicity; includes up and running sooner and at a lower cost

Openness: Interact with HANA in BW Mode or in native SQL Mode or both

Modern interface: Simplify access for everyone, not just database users

Before, had to resort to SAP Gui

Data flow, transformation, see on the right side

DTP features are now in Eclipse

Source: SAP

No alternative to SAP Gui so far

Made big steps – monitoring of process chains, systems, in a web experience

BW/4HANA cockpit, fully configurable, to manage data store objects (middle row)

How to model a process chain in BW/4HANA – a web based experience (back right)

In the front you see the monitoring piece of the process chain

Source: SAP

Process chain statistics – you see run time distributions of process chains; this is one of the tiles in BW/4HANA cockpit

Using the technical content

Shifted from Gui to web based experience for request management

Load request on the left, the activation requests are on the right

Now in an ADSO possible to change data in the inbound activation queue (what you could do before with the PSA)

Source: SAP

Options for data tiering optimizations

Support for Vora, HDFS in cold storage, to shrink size of online database

Source: SAP

Partition admin of ADSO is enhanced

Split partitions in more sophisticated modes

Source: SAP

New process type to adjust data tiering via process chain

Source: SAP

Haven‘t worked on this for a very long time; no change since 7.0

Have some customers in industries with high amounts of master data

Learn from ADSO and apply to master data

If check “enhanced master data“ get an ADSO like – active table and change log – then you can do parallel loads

Integration with SAP Data Hub

Data Hub can execute BW process chains

Run Data Hub task flows from within the BW process chain

Source: SAP

Integration with Hadoop; now able to offer HDFS files as an OpenHub destination

Source: SAP

Integration of analytic engine with Analysis Office – blog

Create query in BW, have choice of 6 read modes

In BW/4HANA evaluate statistics and machine learning to select the fastest / best read mode

Add comments to query cells – dedicated document store to add cell based comments in the query – depends on front end tool – use Analysis Office 2.7, available now

BW/4HANA offered as a SaaS

Code name of Blueberry

Near future

Start beta phase around SAP TechEd timeframe

GA is planned for end of Q1 next year

Infrastructure handled by SAP

Working towards tight integration with SAP Analytics Cloud

Subject to change

Source: SAP

Key benefits; faster go live

Fully functional BW system, ready for global deployments

Transparency of cost

Code-line and how Blueberry relates to 2.0

New code line, one code line where both systems are provisioned

More rapid updates in cloud, yearly updates on-premise

Roadmap

Source: SAP

Next FP is planned for the end of 2018/early 2019

close integration with SAP cloud solutions

Openness – Data Hub; main top of Data Hub is to provide a metadata catalog, so integrating BW/4HANA is part of this

Source: SAP
2019 and beyond
Working on Project Blueberry
Common transport mechanisms with Data Hub

Modern interface – planned for BW/4HANA Cockpit, includes machine learning DW admin – system will learn how certain situations will be handled

Q: is this cockpit also available on BW 7.5 on HANA ?
A: no it’s only available in BW/4HANA

More BW/4HANA webcasts are planned for later – we have sent the list to our ASUG team.
