Next week, SAP will be at Google Cloud Next in San Francisco. It’s the event where Google Cloud engineers, customers and partners like SAP gather for inspiration and hands-on experiences. We’re excited to meet customers and share our new SAP Cloud Platform Android SDK!

We recognized the need to deliver better tools to support Android in SAP Cloud Platform Mobile Services. We started the journey with a launch in April of our micro app development feature, SAP Mobile Cards for Android. The Sapphire announcement was all about the SAP Cloud Platform SDK for Android. This completely new SDK, built collaboratively with our Android colleagues at Google, is available in limited release today.  By working closely with Google we are combining the strength of SAP Cloud Platform with the global reach of the Android operating system.

What can you expect to learn at Google Cloud Next?

Instead of a traditional booth, SAP will have a hands-on experience area. If you’ve been to SAP TechEd or Sapphire, it’s kind of like the Developer’s Garage where you can explore all of our Google innovations in one place – with experts to guide you.

This includes hands on sessions for the Android SDK. Android developers will definitely want to come by! You’ll find the new SDK very familiar – that’s because it was built by Android developers for Android developers. Using the SAP Cloud Platform SDK for Android, you can quickly create powerful yet elegant digital native apps to support your Android user population.

Below is an image that depicts Android activities using the new SDK:

In your hands-on experience with the SDK, you'll start with the SDK Wizard - a productivity enhancement tool and a plugin for Android Studio that can help you jumpstart your Android project. As you work through exercises, the wizard will guide you through the steps necessary to wire your application to Mobile Services and to the backend system of record. After answering just a few questions, out comes a fully functional Mobile Services based app, complete with a reference UI based on SAP Fiori for Android.  After you explore the generated application, you'll make some customizations, changing the default UX to accommodate an end user request.  Last, you'll see how easy it is to send a push notification from Mobile Services to the device - all in realtime! And if you finish everything, you may win a prize (and who doesn't like prizes?)

You can see an end to end demo of the wizard by watching this brief Overview Video.
