On May 3rd, about 150 healthcare practitioners, life sciences professionals, tech innovators and educators gathered at MATTER, to participate in the Blockchain in Healthcare Summit hosted by the University of Illinois at Chicago, SAP, and Advanced Clinical. This was another outstanding event led by our UIC SAP Next-Gen Digital Health Chapter and its unique collaboration between UI Health and UIC Business. This event was perfectly aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Blockchain is a foundational technology that has been widely adopted in the crypto-currency markets. Blockchain’s fundamental capabilities lend themselves to adoption in other markets as well, including the healthcare and life science industries. The summit brought together medical, industry and academic professionals to explore the most promising applications of blockchain in the life sciences. The purpose of this event was to discuss the opportunities represented by blockchain technology with the intention of fostering future collaboration among established and emerging players in the healthcare arena.
Sessions illustrated the ways in which UIC, SAP and MATTER's Chicago based startups are currently leveraging blockchain technology to solve key challenges, and explored opportunities for applying blockchain to key strategic areas in healthcare as a whole.
Topics included:
- Potential impacts of blockchain on clinical outcomes through improved lung cancer screenings, tracking and treating traumatic brain injuries and pathology specimen tracking
- How blockchain can help us map the patient journey and better understand social determinants of health
- Current local and statewide initiatives in blockchain, including those focused on education and public health
