This blog is the first of our “In a nutshell” series in which we show how the user experience for a familiar business process is improved by using SAP Fiori in SAP S/4HANA.

For many companies, “incident management” is synonymous with “recording and reporting of accidents” as a pure legal compliance activity. While this focus on compliance fulfillment is understandable, companies miss out on the huge opportunities of a holistic incident management. Tracking all types of incidents – near misses and safety observations as well – uncovers real root causes and helps to prevent future costs and injuries. This preventive and proactive health, safety and environment culture is what best-run companies strive to achieve.

Three requirements for efficient incident management processes are: integration – standardization – automation.

  • Integration means bringing together data about people, sites and machines. It also means integrating processes from data collection through analysis to follow-up measures.

  • Standardized workflows ensure efficient processing and that nothing gets lost along the way. Transparency and comparability is achieved by standardized analytics and predefined content like text catalogues.

  • Built on these two, automation guarantees efficiency across the end-to-end process from data acquisition to generating outputs like regulatory forms and analytical reports.

SAP S/4HANA for incident management connects Field Operations, EHS Management and the Corporate Level. The role-based solution enables the field to efficiently record the incidents and trigger follow-up actions in real time. Safety managers find the root causes and counteract them, while aggregated information is provided automatically for reporting.

Using SAP Fiori, the Safety Manager documents affected employees, injured body parts, involved infrastructure and causes in SAP S/4HANA, with just a few clicks. Relevant stakeholders like the safety manager and corporate manager can be added to the incident. The medical treatment, which the employee has received or is to be receiving, is recorded as well. With this functionality, the safety manager can reduce EH&S penalties and fines, increase employee engagement and reduce unplanned downtime.

SAP S/4HANA for incident management is available for SAP S/4HANA (on-premise) and S/4HANA cloud, private edition.
