Digital transformation is necessary as business and industry data is more and more connected. Businesses have this data everywhere, and it flows freely and continuously. Leveraging that data in real time is essential to making key business decisions, and selecting the right solution makes all the difference. SAP is no stranger to providing a streaming analytics solution for these business partners and administrators. Recently, SAP was named a “Leader” in The Forrester Wave™: Streaming Analytics, Q3 2017 report. SAP HANA streaming analytics received a 5 out of 5 score on administration, deployment, acquisition and pricing, ability to execute, implementation support, and partners.

SAP HANA streaming analytics fulfills a pivotal role in business. Originally, digital data was a passive resource. It would sit in a database, at rest, until queried or analyzed. But with streaming analytics, data becomes active. Data flows through streaming analytics continuously into your system, and as it does, streaming analytics queries the data for filtering, augmentation, or analysis using built-in analytics and machine-learning algorithms.

The tight integration between SAP HANA and SAP HANA streaming analytics allows businesses to handle data-in-motion and data-at-rest through an approach also referred to as a lambda architecture. The key IDEA behind streaming analytics is that we bring the data to the query as opposed to the other way around.  That way, decisions are made instantaneously.

When a system can access data-in-motion, your operations become more efficient. Your system is monitored constantly, and notifications can be sent to administrators immediately once the system detects an anomaly. Or, you can create a classification model that identifies and adapts to online consumers on the fly. Time sensitive operations become less cumbersome for you and your system.

Now, when do we apply the capabilities of SAP HANA streaming analytics? This comes down to where we want to improve our system. Take Swiss Federal Rail (SBB). Their energy infrastructure cost scales based on use and, during the winter, providing enough power during peak hours carries logistical and financial challenges. Using SAP HANA streaming analytics, SBB monitors their system to react immediately to peak loads by reducing the energy used for non-essential systems in short periods. The load becomes light enough for the system to maintain, without sacrificing passenger comfort or system reliability.

SAP HANA and SAP HANA streaming analytics work together seamlessly and are continuously growing into more modern services with additional supported data types and operations. Implementing SAP HANA and streaming analytics within your system will give you the ability to monitor and react to your data live, with the speed and reliability you expect from SAP.
